GB News presenters Simon McCoy and Kirsty Gallacher spoke to marine ecologist and fisheries biologist Bryce Stewart to discuss the dispute, with the former commenting the French were “trying it on”. It comes as French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that France will not be starting retaliatory action against British trade in order to allow talks in the post-Brexit fishing dispute to continue.

“Let’s talk about France,” Simon stated. “Because they delayed issuing punitive action on the UK after it threatened to block British fishing boats from its ports from midnight last night.

“This deadline for the UK to agree to issue more fishing licenses to french fishermen has therefore been extended, the talks between the two countries continuing.”

Bryce explained: “It goes back decades actually, but all of this is obviously connected to Brexit.

“The fact that French boats and a range of European boats have traditionally fished in British waters, so with the Brexit deal that was signed at the end of last year, the idea was that originally from the UK’s point of view that it would reserve the area just around the British coast, but that wasn’t what was ultimately achieved in this deal.”
