This Death Theory on the 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 16 Poster Proves Fans Want More Drama

For more than a decade, Grey’s Anatomy fans have lived in fear over the lives of their favorite characters. In the sixth season, fans lost George O’Malley (T.R Knight). They later witnessed the deaths of Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane). And just when things seemed to cool down, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) died. But now, as a new era approaches on Sept. 26, fans are theorizing yet another major character death following the Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 poster release. So clearly, trust just isn’t in the cards if you’re a Grey’s fan.

On Sept. 19, ABC dropped the Grey’s Anatomy poster for season 16, featuring the stunning Ellen Pompeo. The teaser showed Meredith Grey dressed in all black with the tagline, “Where do we go from here?”

After a season of love last year, fans have been speculating what’s to come now that Meredith, Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) no longer work at Grey Sloan Memorial. However, it seems some fans think the upcoming season will kill off a major character.

On Reddit, a viewer posted a photo comparing the season 16 poster with an old picture of Meredith from season 11. Both photos appear similar — Meredith is featured and everyone passing by has a motion blur effect.

“The last time a poster had a blurry background was when Derek died,” the Redditor explained, sharing fans on Twitter hypothesized this could indicate the death of someone important.

Nevertheless, this fan theory was quickly diffused. The official Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 poster featured a close-up of Meredith “looking beyond” Derek, per The Hollywood Reporter. So, the blurry image circulating on social media was likely fan-made. Of course, this means the theory can’t be true.

That being said, the discussion created by the poster theory meant one thing — fans miss old episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and they’re dying to see more drama.

Fans dispute the poster theory

In a separate post containing the same theory, a Grey’s Anatomy fan pointed out they were actually interested in a major character’s death in the upcoming season.

“I don’t know, I’m kind of here for it,” the Reddit user wrote. “Obviously people are reading too much into it, but let’s be honest, it’s clear that some of us are bored. I’m bored. Well, maybe it’s time to accept that good Grey’s Anatomy means killing characters sometimes.”

Regardless of what happens, the fan is willing to give Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 a shot. “Let’s see what happens,” the fan explained. “Make me excited, make me look forward to episodes where I will cry and scream at the TV again. I just want to feel something when I watch this show, like I used to.”

“Be honest with yourselves,” the Redditor continued. “How many times have you cried, how many of us have grieved over George or Lexie or Mark or even Derek? And we’re still here, we are still watching, I say bring it on. I dare them to kill someone off.”

Meanwhile, other fans noted Grey’s Anatomy is a different show these days, especially now that Krista Vernoff has taken over. “I think it’s time for Grey’s fans to stop this ‘everybody is dying’ hysteria because it’s no longer true,” one fan shared. “Krista made it clear how she sees the show, she thinks it is romcom and even characters she doesn’t care about much (April, Arizona) walk out alive.”

“As much as I kind of like that, with the characters being all happy and in love, I hate it too,” another fan said. “I want some real drama and not the one caused by Meredith when it could have been entirely avoided. Honestly as long as it isn’t Alex, I’d be up for anyone dying.”

In all honesty, we miss the wild ride of emotions we used to feel when we watched Grey’s Anatomy, too. But, regardless of happens when the medical drama kicks off its 16th season, we have faith Vernoff will take the characters where they need to go. So for now, fans just need to wait for what’s to come — no matter what that may be.
