Memes on Twitter hardly tend to make any sense to those who one) don’t inhabit that particular space of the Internet and two) weren’t brought up with the unhinged and often senseless humor of millennials and Gen Z-ers. Add in a dash of nostalgia—say, in the form of the popular aughties TV teen drama Gossip Girl—and the results are sure to spread like wildfire.
With that, I introduce to you the new Gossip Girl meme. A resurrection of a pair of images from the 2007-born series, it features a split screen of iconic Upper East Siders Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), both smiling.
The concept is fairly simple to grasp and imitate: By rearranging the letters of the title of the show, a clever Blair offers a clipped (and, consequently, usually absurd) response to her BFF. Serena needs to use the bathroom? Well, “Go piss girl.” Serena’s plane is about to leave? Then it’s, “Go girl.” Maybe Serena is cyberstalking her ex (presumably, Lonely Boy) again? Simply, “Girl.”

The genesis of this new meme format comes ahead of the Gossip Girl reboot, which will premiere on the forthcoming streaming service HBO Max. Of course, the reboot will have a modern update, focusing specifically on social media.
