While Strictly Come Dancing gears up for another stellar series in September, host Claudia Winkleman is keeping herself busy with presenting Best Home Cook on BBC Two. Over the past month, viewers have tuned in to see the amateur cooks battle it out in every task. Ahead of tonight’s episode, Claudia and judge Angela Hartnett spoke about what it was like working with their co-stars.
Mary Berry, Chris Bavin and Angela Hartnett are on the hunt for the nation’s best home cook and in two weeks time, one contestant will be crowned champion.
Ahead of the second series premiering earlier this month, the three judges and Claudia sat down with the press to discuss what would be in store for fans, however, during a conversation with Claudia and Angela, it was clear as to who the dominant characters were in the show’s line-up.
When asked whether there was anything the pair of them wouldn’t eat, Claudia said: “No, I don’t believe in rice pudding or custard but they didn’t have to make either of those things.
Angela also offered: “Coriander but if you don’t like it it’s not fair. We can’t sort of not judge them just because you don’t like it, I don’t know lots of spice.”

While trying to explain her reasons, Chris, who was sitting on another table was bellowing and Claudia commented: “We’ve got to fight with Chris’ voice – this is never going to work,” and Angela addd: “So loud!”
As for what it was like to work alongside Mary – the Queen of cakes, Claudia and Angela were naturally full of praise for the baking icon.
Claudia stated: “I mean, she’s a goddess,” and Angela agreed: “She is. She gets cold easily as does this one [Claudia]. That’s my only complaint about them both.
“Me and Mary sit in the room will have a couple of hot water bottles down our trousers, eating. I’m not lying! I’m not, this is no exaggeration, Claudia added.
“The heating is full on, we’re sitting there with blankets, I’ve never knowingly been warm.”
“And these guys [Angela and Chris], Chris is taking off layers,” Claudia explained and Angela said: “I stand at the door ‘anything I need to know? Right, I’m seeing you later!’ And I just walk off and sit outside, it’s so hot.”
“Mary is funny as hell, and what’s so magnificent about her is she is Mary Berry and the contestants – they wanted to please everyone – but when Mary walks past the bench, everyone would gasp.
“She is the Mary Berry and she puts everyone at ease. Everyone from cameraman to soundman to contestant, she’s the kindest girl.”

“And her knowledge is phenomenal,” Angela remarked. “You could pigeonhole her and say she is all about baking, but actually when we did all the eliminators, and some of them were quite restaurant dishes, Mary was questioning me about it, she really knows her stuff.
“And it took me a while to say ‘actually I disagree’ because you never want to disagree with Mary!
“That’s the beauty of having three judges, you’ve all got three palettes and three opinions. When there was something phenomenal, obviously we all [agreed].
“But there was the odd one that Chris would like it more than me and vice versa. So it was always quite interesting,” Angela continued.

Last week, viewers tuned in to see the remaining seven amateur cooks bake their ultimate children’s birthday cakes, sadly it was the end of the road for Elizabetta.
Tonight, Mary will give the contestants just one hour and 45 minutes to create their ultimate curry night, which includes two different dishes, a traditional bread and a fried snack.
Following this, Chris’ challenge will see the remaining cooks rustle up something using an ingredient that features on most people’s weekly shopping list, before the weakest two will battle it out n the cook-off.
