This Morning backlash as NTA nod branded fix after Phillip Schofield scandal

Holly Willoughby has awkward on-air ‘gimp’ blunder

The National Television Awards (NTA) has come under fire after This Morning was given a nod in the wake of the controversy surrounding former host Phillip Schofield.

Earlier this summer, Phillip stepped down from the ITV show after admitting to having an “unwise but not illegal” affair with a younger male colleague.

After the NTA nominations were announced earlier this week, many fans hit out over This Morning being shortlisted months after the Phillip scandal which led to an investigation into “toxicity” at ITV.

Joyce Combe fumed on Twitter: “Sorry not voting for this morning to win the NTAs for best daytime show due to the Phillip Schofield scandal. I will be voting four #thechase they deserve to win and not This Morning.”

Evi added: “How beautiful to have watched the Soap Awards without the Schofield drama. Can’t wait for the NTAs, and hope that This Morning doesn’t win any awards. I will be gobsmacked if they do. I’m hoping the public, has fallen flat on the voting platform, and missed the train.”

Another remarked: “Don’t think #thismorning will win at the NTA’s this year…”

Meanwhile, Ruth Maxwell-Hudson wrote: “Wondering why you’ve cancelled @Schofe. So he lied about an affair, who wouldn’t? You decide to just omit him like he never existed?

“These awards are for the last year, so he should be on the list. You’ve even clipped him off the promo video here!! Disgusting.”

Kirby Sowden shared with a thinking face emoji: “Wonder who will get best daytime.”

Phillip admitted to lying to his co-host Holly Willoughby about his affair and was dropped by his agent.

The 61-year-old said he expected his career would go “nowhere” in a sitdown interview with the BBC’s Amol Rajan.

Holly has continued to present This Morning following Phillip’s exit but she has not been nominated for a TV Presenter gong this year.

She is currently on an extended break for the summer and is expected to return to This Morning next month.

Those nominated for the TV Presenter award include Claudia Winkleman, Bradley Walsh, Alison Hammon and Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly.

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! hosts Ant and Dec have won the prestigious award a total of 21 times, but will their luck change this year?

The National Television Awards take place on September 5 on ITV at 7.30pm.
