This Morning's Eamonn Holmes in extraordinary on-air outburst about him and Ruth Langsford getting axed

THIS Morning's Eamonn Holmes launched into an extraordinary on-air outburst about him and wife Ruth Langsford's axing from the show today.

The 61-year-old star said ITV bosses were "getting rid of us" as he compared himself to a cut-price Christmas tree on their last Friday at regular hosts.

He told Ruth, 60: "Do you know what I saw yesterday? Outside the opticians was a man selling Christmas trees, discounting them by half price."

His wife replied: "They're struggling to get rid of them, I suppose."

Eamonn told her: "I would say so darling. That's the obvious conclusion. Which is why they're getting rid of us on a Friday now."

She chided him: "Oh stop" before continuing with the rest of the show, which is their last before being forced to step down.

Eamonn posted an emotional tribute to the show today, tweeting: "We bow out of 15 years of our Friday slot on This Morning today.

"Thanks for the memories hope we made some for you too. Until February, may it be a happy Christmas to you all.”

The pair, who are being replaced by Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, will return as holiday cover in the February half term.

The X Factor host and former Big Brother star Alison will present their first show on January 8.

Many viewers applauded Eamonn for having his say on air, with one tweeting: "Welldone for getting the Friday morning comment in, I’m still bloody fuming."

Another tweeted: "Eamon firing shots on #thismorning Things you love to see. ?."

A third said: "Go On Eamonn!!! Very Rightly Said. Fridays WONT Be The Same Without You 2!"
