Towie's Tommy Mallet has been 'stuck in a back brace' for almost a month and can barely walk after suffering from piriformis syndrome

TOWIE star Tommy Mallett has revealed he was forced to spend a month in a back brace and was left struggling to walk after suffering with piriformis syndrome.

The reality star admitted he has lost a stone in just seven days after putting on some weight over the Christmas period, as he struggled to move about.

Sharing a snap on Instagram, Tommy is stood topless in just the tight brace and shorts, showing off his slimmer figure with a worried expression on his face.

He wrote: "Put so much weight on over December from having piriformis syndrome.. Been stuck in a back brace.. But lost a stone in 7 days..

"I ain't a ripped geezer but considering I've struggled to walk I think I've done ok!! Thanks @georgiakousoulou for pushing me."

Piriformis syndrome is a neuromuscular disorder where the piriformis muscle, located in the buttock region, spasms and causes buttock pain by compressing the sciatic nerve.

The muscle is important in lower body movement.

Fans immediately shared their concern for the star, as one commented: "Hope you feel better."

While another added: "You shouldn't have to justify yourself, screw what people say or think, you're a great guy! I wish you well."

What is piriformis syndrome?

Piriformis syndrome is a neuromuscular disorder where the piriformis muscle, located in the buttock region, spasms and causes buttock pain by compressing the sciatic nerve. This can then cause pain, numbness and tingling along the back of the leg and into the foot. It can prevent lower body movement. The exact causes of piriformis syndrome are unknown.

It comes just weeks after Tommy was praised for opening up about his battle with dyslexia.

The Essex lad and his girlfriend Georgia Kousoulou were on hand to speak to young students at a local high school as they attempted to help inspire the youth to chase their dreams – even if they fail to gain their GCSEs.

Tommy was clearly nervous as he spoke to the hall of children as he began: "I  brought her with me because I can't read that good so don't laugh. I'm here today because I've got some words of wisdom to inspire people.

"When I left school I didn't get no grades at all so you can imagine it was hard. I'm dyslexic and I struggled with every subject. The one thing I knew …"

As he faltered, Georgia continued: "The one thing I always knew was that I was going to succeed in life as long as I keep my  head in the correct place and have ambition to get where I want to be."

Tommy added: "My motto is that if you  believe it, if you dream it then  you can achieve it."

Georgia was every inch the proud girlfriend as she gushed about Tommy’s brave speech to her pal Lydia Bright.

Back in August last year, the Towie star was one of many stars to offer advice to teens on GCSE results day as he told social media followers to not “waste time being upset” over bad news, but that “failing gives you hunger for success.”

The businessman, who is a regular face on the ITVBe reality show, also has two successful clothing and footwear companies.

But as he explained he hasn’t let his one GCSE hold him back.

He wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of rapper will.i.am wearing his trainers: “Good luck to everyone expecting there GCSE results today!!

“If you have failed don’t waste time being upset thinking and go out and get what you want!! Failing gives you more hunger for success..”

Tommy, who is currently dating his Towie co-star Georgia Kousoulou, added: “I got one GCSE and had no clue what I was going to do with my life.. Grab opportunitys with both hands and don’t stop until it works #Mallet (sic)”

Speaking about his sole History GCSE, he continued: It’s all about drive & ambition.”
