COUNTDOWN is turning viewers against their phones ahead of its release on Friday.
The new horror film, which will hit cinemas on October 25, tracks the release of a terrifying new app that professes to tell users exactly when they’ll die.
Unfortunately the programme proves to be a lot more than harmless fun as people begin to perish in line the predictions under grisly circumstances.
When a young nurse (Elizabeth Lail) is told she only has three days to live, she finds herself locked in battle against the clock.
Even when she deletes the app and buys a new phone, it rematerializes, leaving her with nowhere to hide.
The trailer shows clips of the terrifying harbingers of death summoned by the app, with some terrifying parallels to the Grim Reaper.
Viewers were so spooked by the footage that many felt unable to use their phones in fear of spotting the terrifying horned icon.
“Well I’m off to bury my phone in the garden after watching the trailer for Countdown. No death for me thanks!” one user wrote.
“God this is the stuff of every Gen Z’s nightmares, turning our phones against us,” a teen added, accompanied by a string of screaming emojis.
“This reminds me of Final Destination! So much scarier that your typical slashers,” a third chimed in.
What better way to get into the Halloween spirit than with a deep-rooted fear of one of your most beloved objects?
With scary season well underway, all manner of horror offerings have hit streaming app Netflix.
Wounds, starring Armie Hammer and Dakota Johnson, follows a similar premise to Countdown, as a couple find a lost mobile phone, only for it to open a portal to a dark dimension.
Meanwhile Eli, featuring Stranger Things’ Sadi Sink, follows a boy with a rare autoimmune condition who is locked in a haunted medical facility.
Then there’s Haunted, a Netflix series based on real life accounts, with a nursing home episode that left fans “pulling their hair out” in terror.
