Emmerdale’s Rachel Hughes (Glenda McKay) met her demise at the hands of chilling murderer Graham Clark (Kevin Pallister).
Rachel, daughter of David and Kate Hughes, made her first appearance in the ITV soap all the way back in 1988.
Arriving in the village – then known as Beckindale – with her mum, the legendary character would go on to feature in multiple memorable stories. The affair she had with Chris Tate (Peter Amory) is perhaps her most iconic story.
Rachel also had a son named Joe Tate, who famously returned to the soap in 2017 with actor Ned Porteous playing the role.
Graham, meanwhile, was a local school teacher who showed up in the eponymous village in 1998.
He quickly hit it off with Rachel, and they embarked on a relationship – which ultimately led to one of the most famous soap moments of all time.
But just what happened to Graham and Rachel?
What happened to Rachel in Emmerdale and did Graham kill her?
Graham couldn’t have been nicer to Rachel, and for all intents and purposes, he appeared to be the best boyfriend one could wish for.
However, his kindness was nothing more than a facade. In reality, Graham was a controlling bully, who quickly took over Rachel’s life.
He made her dress differently, and manipulated her into dying her hair auburn – to resemble his dead wife Rebecca Clark.
One afternoon, Graham took Rachel for a walk in the countryside, where he intended to propose to her.
However, the day in question didn’t exactly go as planned, as Rachel worked out that Graham had been controlling not only she but all of his previous partners – and made the discovery that he’d been attempting to make her look like his dead wife.
She confronted him, and an altercation ensued, which resulted in Rachel finding herself trapped on a clifftop.
Rachel soon came to realise Graham had previously murdered his wife – and subsequently made it look like she had taken her own life.
The cold-blooded killer then pushed Rachel off the cliff – where she fell to her death.
What happened to Graham in Emmerdale?
After Rachel’s demise, Graham embarked on a relationship with Kathy Glover.
Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell), however, started to put two and two together, and before long, he accused sinister Graham of murdering Rachel!
Graham decided to whisk Kathy off for a romantic weekend away in the aftermath of Eric’s accusation, but Kathy started to piece everything together when they left the village.
The killer tried to get Kathy to stop the car, which then veered off the road an teetered on the edge of a cliffside.
Kathy escaped, but Graham did not, as the car fell off the cliff, and exploded into flames.
