Fiona Bruce was born in Singapore in 1964 to an English mother and a Scottish father and has two older brothers.
She went to school in both the UK and in Italy before studying French and Italian at Oxford, where she briefly became a punk.
After graduating, she worked at a management consulting firm before landing a researcher job on the BBC current affairs programme Panorama.

She was the first female to anchor the BBC News at Ten and has fronted countless historical documentaries, including one about Queen Victoria and one on the Queen's official residences.
The journalist has also appeared on Top Gear and often takes part in the annual BBC fund-raiser Children in Need.
Fiona is currently the presenter of BBC favourite The Antiques Roadshow and co-hosts Fake or Fortune alongside Philip Mould.

Fiona Bruce said it was "an honour" to be confirmed as the new host of BBC One's Question Time.
Question Time's former host David Dimbleby presented his final show in December 2018 as Parliament went into Christmas recess.
Bruce said: "It is an honour to be asked to take on one of the great political programmes of the BBC, particularly at a time of such historic change for the UK and tumult at Westminster.
"For many years, Question Time has been presented by one of my television heroes so I am thrilled and not a little daunted to be stepping into his shoes."
