It used to be that we always knew when our favorite network series would return each year. But when it comes to cable networks like HBO, nothing is set in stone. So when does the Emmy-winning drama Westworld return for Season 3? Here’s what we know.
‘Westworld’ premiered in 2016
Westworld first premiered a little over three years ago, in Oct. 2016. For ten episodes, we followed Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), a “host” at the Westworld park who begins to realize that her world isn’t entirely what it seems. Other characters include fellow hosts like Teddy Flood (James Marsden) and Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton), along with those who work behind-the-scenes like Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) and Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson).
The series, which is based on a 1973 sci-fi film of the same name, quickly became a massive hit for HBO. The effects are incredible, of course, but it’s the moral questions asked amidst all of this technology and the shocking reveals that really got audiences talking for ten jaw-dropping episodes.
Season 2 came almost two years later
The problem with making such a brilliant show with so many popular actors is that it takes a very long time. Rather than try and rush things and release on a regular once-a-year schedule, the creators decided they wanted to do things right, and take their time making Season 2 perfect.
And they managed to do just that. Westworld Season 2, subtitled “The Door,” began airing in April 2018. There were two especially notable things about this season. First, the other worlds, such as Shogun World, are introduced, something many fans were excited about. Second, all ten episodes featured a lot of jumping around in time, which kept the mystery of who was still alive intact.
Here’s what we know about Season 3
Season 3 was greenlit before Season 2 even finished, but, as fans now knew, that didn’t mean we should expect it any time soon. Fortunately, we’re at least accustomed to this idea. And the creators were kind enough to give us tidbits of information, including the casting of Aaron Paul as a new character.
And San Diego Comic-Con 2019 brought even more exciting information, with the release of a first trailer. From it, we gather than Dolores is living in the real world, while Maeve is in a park set in Nazi Germany. Bernard is, as Dolores predicted, looking for her. And Charlotte also has a lot going on.
Thompson and Wood worked together on a music video

Most of the actors in Westworld have a lot of other projects going on, given the time it takes to get each season out. Paul, for example, has the new Breaking Bad movie, El Camino. And Wright has recently been cast as Commissioner Gordon in the upcoming DC film The Batman.
As for Thompson and Wood, they ended up doing something else together. Both starred in Beck’s new video for the song “Uneventful Days,” as versions of the artist. They interact with one another a bit, having an argument in a parking lot. They also spent more time together in the new Westworld trailer than in season’s past — could this mean something?
When could ‘Westworld’ Season 3 premiere?
So far, all we know is that Westworld Season 3 will premiere sometime in 2020. Since we haven’t heard anything since SDCC, it stands to reason that it likely won’t be coming early in the year. At this time, our best bet is likely for a Spring 2020 release.
