Who could be the next Doctor Who companion alongside Ncuti Gatwa?

With the Doctor Who centenary special coming this autumn, the rumour mill has been spinning about the future of the beloved sci-fi.

Jodie Whittaker will bow out in an epic special set to come this year and we’ve already got a few answers about what the future will bring.

Ncuti Gatwa is set to take over as the time lord, with David Tennant and Catherine Tate having a role in the 60th anniversary alongside Neil Patrick Harris and Yasmin Finney.

But as for who will join Ncuti as the next companion – we’re still in the dark.

However, that hasn’t stopped eagle-eyed Whovians coming up with some pretty solid guesses.

Rose Ayling-Ellis

Former EastEnders star and Strictly winner Rose is, by far, the most popular guess at the moment thanks to a few clues.

The actress conveniently left the BBC soap recently – and started following returning Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies and actor Ncuti on Instagram. Maybe she’s just a fan – or maybe there’s more to it.

Either way, it’s clear Rose would be an absolutely epic companion. She’s proven her acting chops in EastEnders, she’s ridiculously likeable and charismatic as we’ve seen on Strictly, and we can’t imagine her putting up with any nonsense from the Doctor – an essential companion trait.

Yasmin Finney

We already know that Yasmin will be joining David (who previously played the 10th Doctor) and Catherine (Donna Noble) for the 60th anniversary special next year as a new character called Rose. It’s not confirmed, but it’s widely thought that she’ll be playing Donna’s daughter.

She’s been seen filming for the special episode – but what’s to say she has to stop there? Plenty of companions, including Donna, began as part of a special and then returned for more episodes, or even a full series.

We would love to see it.

Patricia Allison

Could we see a Sex Education reunion on Doctor Who? Stranger things have happened!

Patricia was recently confirmed as one of the Sex Education cast members leaving the show – so might possibly have the time to film Doctor Who.

It would definitely make a big change from Eric and Ola, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s Ncuti and Patricia.

Lydia West

Before Ncuti’s announcement, Lydia was widely rumoured to be taking over as the Doctor.

Having starred in It’s A Sin and Years and Years, she’s clearly got a great working relationship with Russell – so why wouldn’t he bring her back?

She’s definitely got range (we’re still not over her making us cry our hearts out as Jill in It’s A Sin) so we reckon Who would be a walk in the park for her.

Honourable mention: Nicola Coughlan

We know, she’s said she’s not doing it…but what if?

Bridgerton star Nicola was very widely rumoured to be Ncuti’s companion shortly after his casting, with a spectacular photo of them at the Baftas only fuelling the fire.

The rumours got so intense that Nicola ended up having to address it, telling Variety: ‘I am not going to be on Doctor Who. We are doing something together, but it’s not Doctor Who.’

Many have taken this to mean that Nicola will be part of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. But what if she’s done an Andrew Garfield and actually does crop up in Doctor Who? Maybe it’s a reach, but we’re not counting it out entirely…

Doctor Who returns to BBC One this autumn.
