Who does Anthony marry in Bridgerton?

Bridgerton: Anthony advises Daphne on which suitors to avoid

Netflix drama Bridgerton has been adapted from the works of American author Julia Quinn and her Regency Era novel series. Although the streaming platform hasn’t officially renewed the drama yet, fans are scrambling for clues from the books about where the show could be headed next. Book two in the series is called The Viscount Who Loved Me and focuses on the eldest of the Bridgerton children: Anthony (played by Jonathan Bailey).

Who does Anthony marry in Bridgerton?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Bridgerton season 1 and the Bridgerton novels

Season one of Bridgeton painted Anthony as something of rake as he indulged in alfresco trysts with his lover and opera singer Siena Rosso (Sabrina Bartlett).

He hoped to keep seeing her but knew their passionate romance had a shelf life because she was an unsuitable match for the heir to the Bridgerton fortune.

Anthony planned to make his relationship with Siena known even if it attracted backlash from the rest of society, however, the singer broke things off with him.

She found a more suitable man, whom she said accepted her as she was rather than expecting her to bend to the rules and conventions of society.

A heartbroken Anthony left her Siena’s abode as he brooded about his future and continued to be a rake.

His behaviour was highly hypocritical as he tried to wed off his sister Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) without considering her desire to marry for love.

Anthony even tried to steer Daphne away from his friend and fellow rake the Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page).

If the makers of Bridgerton decide to follow the order of the novels, The Viscount Who Loved Me would be the next story to get a TV makeover.

The novel focuses on Anthony and how he eventually finds love after his heartbreak with Siena.

In the novel, Anthony eventually ends up marrying a character called Kate Sheffield, who is described in Quinn’s blurb for the book as “the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom”.

Kate will stop at nothing to protect her younger sister whom Anthony is hoping to marry.

She is also of the opinion rakes don’t make great husbands but somewhere along the line, Kate finds herself drawn to him.

In true Bridgerton style, Anthony and Kate won’t be able to resist each other in a will they/won’t they romance.

Whether the producers will go down this route remains to be seen but it would certainly make for a dramatic season of Bridgerton.

In some respects, it would also see Anthony on the back foot when it comes to romance as he has little control of the situation to find a suitable match for himself.

Either way, one thing seems clear: the show will retain its erotic and sexual scenes which take their cue from the novels.

So, fans can expect to see plenty more steamy moments albeit between Anthony and possibly Kate should they fall for each other.

Speaking about shooting the more intimate scenes on season one, actor Bailey told Entertainment.ie.: “It not only empowers you and makes you feel safe, from a male perspective and definitely for the women that you’re playing opposite, but it just allows you to really act in the moment.

“You know that you’re safe and that you’ve talked to this intimacy coordinator about your own personal boundaries and if there’s anything that you’re nervous about, even before the director comes in.

“So you’re completely in control of your own body, your own physicality, and your own connection.

“And then you can freely work with the director about how delicately you can tell the stories through sexual interaction.”

He added: “And I think for Bridgerton, that is so important.”
