Rumors began to circulate that Rodrigo and Bassett were in a relationship in 2020.
The pair are co-stars on Disney's High School Musical: The Musical: The Series in which their characters dated.
Since their rumored split in 2020, Bassett began to date Carpenter.
However, those reports have never been confirmed by either Rodrigo or Bassett.
Rodrigo released her single Driver's License in which fans believe she throws shade at both Bassett and Carpenter.
Fans highlight Rodrigo's cryptic lyric "I guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me," to Bassett's two solo singles Common Sense and Anyone Else, which released in 2020.
In the track, Rodrigo laments the end of a relationship as she drives through the streets after getting her license, and says, "You're probably with that blonde girl," bringing Disney star Carpenter into the mix.
Afterward, Carpenter released a track of her own, Skin, which intensified the rumors.
The first reference to Olivia's song came as Carpenter sings "Maybe blonde was the only rhyme," giving her the benefit of the doubt.
However, she doubled down and revealed she won't stand down while Rodrigo tries to "get under my skin."
And as if she hadn't made her point clear that the song was a response to Rodrigo, Carpenter sings "don't drive yourself insane, it won't always be this way."
What did Bassett say about the SNL sketch?
Saturday Night Live dropped a ha-ha homage to Rodrigo's Driver's License track on February 20, only setting the scene in a pool hall with grown men engaging in the drama.
In the SNL sketch, Regé-Jean Page plays Drivers Licence – which he calls "my song" – on the jukebox to his buddies at the pool hall.
His gang of "manly men", including Pete Davidson, Mikey Day, Alex Moffat and Bowen Yang, are confused as to what the tune is about.
Alex Mofatt says: "I think I overheard on the news or something that it’s actually about the kids from High School Musical. I don’t know."
Pete Davidson replies: "Oh, who? Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron, Sharpay -that whole crew?”
Page then insists: “Nah, man. Olivia wrote it about Joshua Bassett who’s allegedly now with Sabrina Carpenter.”
Page and his pals then discuss Rodrigo's musical influences, saying she reminds them of Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift.
One of the men cuts in, "I gotta hear that freaking bridge again, man," and the group join forces to belt out the climactic chorus.
Rodrigo – who turned 18 on February 20 – tweeted: "DRIVERS LICENSE SNL SKETCH IS THE BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER. I'M SHAKING."
The singer added on her Instagram Stories: "I'm losing my mind an SNL sketch ab drivers licence omg [sic]."
Bassett also responded to the SNL parody, via TikTok, calling it a “Dream come true.”
