He had previously tried to make it on the show twice but failed to get through to the audition stage.

Olly progressed to the final during which he duetted with his idol Robbie Williams – who fluffed his lines as he came on stage but recovered with Olly’s help.

Olly lost the coveted X Factor crown to Joe McElderry but signed a joint contract with Epic Records and Syco Music and released his debut single Please Don’t Let Me Go in August 2010.

It went straight to the top of the singles chart and he's been on the up ever since.

Olly has gone on to record and release four more albums, all of which have gone platinum and straight to the top of the album chart.

He also had eight top ten singles, four of which were Number One.

He then co-hosted the eighth and ninth series of the Xtra Factor with Caroline Flack before they took over from Dermot O’Leary to present the twelfth series of the main show.

Both he and Caroline quit at the end of the run.

He has also starred as a coach on The Voice for the 2018 series and has played for the Soccer Aid England squad five times in a row.

And in 2022, it was announced that he had would be back on Saturday night TV as the host of new ITV singing competition Starstruck.

It will be the first time he has presented a prime-time flagship show on his own and insiders revealed how he was raring to go.

One said: “Olly is absolutely thrilled about joining the Starstruck team. As well as being a hugely successful musician he’s more than proved his merit on the telly. After watching him do his stuff on the last series of The Voice, ITV bosses knew that he was the right choice to present Starstruck.

“Olly has great stage presence and is full of fun. Not only that, he knows exactly what it’s like to be on a TV show where you’re being judged. He has been on The Voice for four years and he made a name for himself on The X Factor as runner-up on the 2009 series.

“Olly can’t wait to get started on the show and thinks this is going to be a great launchpad for him doing more solo presenting work in the future.”
