Ackley Bridge is a popular comedy-drama series airing on Channel 4 and this year has seen many changes to the programme. Not only has it changed its time slot to 6pm, but a whole bunch of new faces are taking the lead. The heartthrob of season four is Johnny Cooper, and Express.co.uk has all you need to know about who plays him.

Who plays Johnny Cooper in Ackley Bridge season 4?

Ackley Bridge came back with a bang and a love triangle is already starting to form between the new cast.

Kayla Azfal (played by Robyn Cara) and Fizza Akhtar (Yasmin Al-Khudhairi) both fell for new student Johnny Cooper on the first day.

Johnny, a Romany Gypsy student, is played by Ryan Dean – an actor who has previously appeared in Billy Elliot the Musical and Penny on M.A.R.S.

He has also starred in the 2019 film, The Gentlemen, in which he played Murka.

His Ackley Bridge character is described as a “cocky, good-looking member of the traveller community who is deeply suspicious of school”.

The star is on Instagram and he has more than 21,000 followers, whom he has kept updated with his latest ventures.

He describes himself as a keen musician and has shared links to his latest music on Spotify and YouTube.

He shared the trailer for the new season of Ackley Bridge and fans were quick to show their support.

One said: “I’ll just look because it’s you,” meanwhile another said: “Super proud of you!!”

In the trailer, he is seen arriving at school on the back of a horse as he and the rest of his traveller community hope to set up camp near the school.

Both Kayla and Fizza are quick to try and impress the new kid on the block.

Meanwhile, Johnny is having trouble fitting in and he is heard saying to his teachers: “You can shove your school, I have heard it all before.”

The young actor also shared some behind the scenes photos from season four, saying: “A little peek into life on the set of Ackley Bridge Season 4! More to come.”

The photos showed the star having his makeup touched up for an outdoor shoot, and a photo of his character wearing a facemask, standing in front of a school display.

One fan said: “You are going to be amazing and good luck,” whereas another said: “I adore you.”

Dean said he has watched the previous seasons and really enjoyed them, praising the rest of the talented cast.

He described the new season as bringing a fresh look to a familiar environment, where new cultures are introduced.

Commenting on his character, he told Channel 4: “I think he’s quite rebellious against all kinds of authority as he’s not been treated brilliantly before.

“Whether it be school or whether it be in daily life, except with his family. He likes to stand on his own two feet and make his own decisions.

“He’s very big on honour, especially within his family. If he says, he’s going to do something then he’s going to do it.”

The star said he was able to relate to his character as in real life he “didn’t like school”.

He said: “I didn’t feel like I fit in to be totally honest. I just thought you had to get through school – and that’s that.”

Having landed a job in Billy Elliot the Musical in the West End, he was able to leave school early.

In order to keep up his education, he would have tutors in between rehearsals.

Ackley Bridge is airing on weekdays at 6pm on Channel 4.
