He said he has been left with PTSD following his dad's death, which he found out about while watching TV,

Pete revealed how on that fateful day his father told him he was going to "pick up from school", before the worst happened.

Speaking on the Jon Bernthal's Real Ones podcast, he said: "I got picked up by my mom.

"She didn't tell me what was going on for like three days. She kept telling me dad's at work, I had no idea.

"My mom's like, 'You're just grounded, you're not allowed to watch TV'.

"I was like, 'What? I didn't do anything'. And then one night I turn on the TV and I saw my dad on TV.

"They're like, 'These are all the fireman who are dead."

Pete said it was a very "weird" time for his family, who didn't know for weeks whether his father was actually alive or dead as rescue missions continued to pull people from the rubble.

He said: "There was just some sort of hope and it was just up and down and nobody knew the right way to deal with it."

Pete also pointed out that his mother was only 30-years-old at the time of 9/11, around the same age he is now.

He added: "That's why, as I get older, I'm like, 'Man, my mom was awesome'."

Pete also revealed he has untaken trauma therapy to deal with the awful tragedy.

After his dad died, the actor struggled to trust people.

Pete said: "Dad says he's going to pick you up, he doesn't, so for life I don't believe anyone.",

"I'm trying to learn how to believe people and Hollywood isn't the best place to learn that skill. I went from traumatic life to high school traumatic life, because Hollywood's like high school."

Also in 2021, the comedian revealed that his movie, The King Of Staten Island, which explores his upbringing on the island, helped him to come to terms with his father's passing.

Speaking to Sky News, Pete said: "As someone who's open with struggles and issues, I think I'm always learning and growing. Making this film allowed me to grow more as a person."

He added: "One of the main reasons why I wanted to make this movie and tell this story was because I wanted this chapter in my life to be closed.

"Not forgotten, but I wanted to be able to move on and show that it's okay to have issues and it's okay to struggle and that you're not alone and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel."

In honor of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 in 2020, Pete and fellow comedian Jon Stewart, along with others, hosted a comedy show to raise money for charities benefitting victims of the terrorist attack and their families.

The pair took part in NYC Still Rising After 20 Years: A Comedy Celebration at Madison Square Garden,

Pete also his father's badge number, 8418, tattooed on his left arm.
