John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) and his family faced even more challenges on the ranch this week on Yellowstone, while a revealing flashback shed more light on John’s younger self (Josh Lucas) and his efforts to preserve his land. With his daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly) facing time behind bars, he may have to turn to some unlikely allies for help next time on the hit Paramount Network drama.

John and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) could be about to partner up again in this season of Yellowstone.

While they’ve remained fierce rivals throughout the series, the threat of Caroline Warner (Jacki Weaver) could force them to put their differences aside.

The Broken Rock community still isn’t sure what John’s governorship could mean for them, but the latest sneak peek has hinted Rainwater is about to make a huge gamble.

In the trailer for next Sunday’s episode, John and Rainwater have their first covert meeting of the current season.

The two powerful Montana officials have teamed up in the past, but only when the threat of a common enemy calls for desperate measures.

Now Caroline’s company has started to make its next moves against the ranch, they may have to try and bury the hatchet for good.

Rainwater says to John: “We do need to talk. A lot of very unhappy people.”

Their meeting could be the start of another reluctant partnership to ensure Market Equities doesn’t get its hands on their valuable land.

The Broken Rock chief could be referring to unhappy people within his tribe, who don’t believe John has done enough to fight back against the company’s plans.

For her next attack on the ranch, Caroline has enlisted the help of her right-hand woman Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) to go toe-to-toe with Beth.

Caroline has been desperate to take over the ranch to build an airport and make Market Equities millions by converting the land into a profitable tourist destination.

However, John’s newfound political power has put a temporary stop to her plans, and winning the favour of the Broken Rock community could drive her out for good.

Could the Duttons’ find a permanent ally in Rainwater and the Montana Natives?

Or will the community declare their own war for the ranch once Caroline is out of the picture?

On the other hand, Rainwater could be referring to people unhappy at Beth, who continued to wreak havoc this week.

At the end of Sunday night’s episode, her husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) is called to the aftermath of a bar fight Beth initiated.

She’s now facing considerable time in jail if her opponent decides to press formal charges for assault and battery.

Out of desperation, John could turn to Rainwater to pull some strings and ensure his daughter’s freedom.

Some viewers might be thinking it’s a long time coming for Beth, but John knows the ranch is far safer with her to protect it and will stop at nothing to keep her out of trouble.

Yellowstone season 5 continues Sundays on the Paramount Network in the USA and the following Monday on Paramount+.
