Ben Cross was an English stage and film actor from London, best known for his roles in the films Chariots of Fire and Stark Trek. Sadly, earlier today, Cross’s family announced he had died, aged 72.  Express.co.uk has everything you need to know. 

How did Ben Cross die?

On Monday, August 18, the family of Ben Cross announced he had died after a short, unspecified illness.

He was 72-years-old at the time of his death. 

In a statement on Facebook, his daughter wrote: “I am utterly heartbroken to share with you that my darling father died a few hours ago.

“He had been sick for a while but there was a rapid decline over the past week.”

Cross is survived by hs wife Deyana Boneva Cross, and two children, Theo and Lauren.

After graduating from RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts) in the 1970s, Cross pursued a career in film and television.

He appeared in several plays including Macbeth, The Importance of Being Earnest and Arthur Miller’s Death of Salesman and later became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Cross made his first film appearance as Trooper Binns in  Joseph E. Levine‘s World War II epic A Bridge Too Far.

In a Bridge Too Far, Cross starred alongside  Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, Michael Caine and James Caan.

His breakout role wasas Billy Flynn in Chicago, which propelled him to international stardom.

Cross is best known for his role in the Oscar-winning film  Chariots of Fire.

In Chariots of Fire, Cross played the role of  Harold Abrahams opposite  Ian Charleson as Eric Liddell.

Cross is also well known for his portrayal of Sarek in the 2009 Star Trek reboot.

His other credits include First Knight, Nuremberg: Nazis on Trial, Steal the Sky and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Cross was also a director, writer and musician outside of acting.

Cross also has a number of projects in the works which are yet to be released, including  the Netflix romance Last Letter to Your Lover with Shailene Woodley and Felicity Jones.

He will also star in the supernatural horror, The Devil’s Light alongside Virigina Madsen.

Tributes from the acting world have been pouring in for the late actor.

Mariel Hemingway tweeted: ” RIP #bencross. We worked together on Steal the Sky For HBO IN 1988. We worked in Jerusalem together. It was right after having my first baby dreelouisehemingway.”

Angus macfayden simply tweeted: “godspeed my scandalous friend” alongside an article confirming Cross’s death.

Mark. A Altman tweeted: “We just lost a member of our @seriespandora family. Ben was an incredible actor and a delight to work with. He will be greatly missed by all of us. #BenCross #pandoraCW.”
