Chris Harris: ‘I don’t want to be here’ Top Gear host on why he wanted to halt filming

Top Gear presenter Chris Harris, 45, has been fronting the car show since 2017. His fellow co-stars Paddy McGuinness, 46, and Freddie Flintoff, 42, joined the line-up last year.

In the current series, the trio were sent on a high-altitude mountain expedition in Peru.

Last month, Chris and Paddy joined Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on This Morning to discuss the show’s current series.

Presenter Phil asked the car enthusiast: “How many pinch me moments have you had?”

“Everyday for me,” Chris replied. “I’m just a random bloke off the internet who got the job of a lifetime.”

He added: “I hate to say it but I get to work with a couple of my heroes.”

Phillip then brought up a moment where the presenters filmed on the top of a mountain in Peru, where Chris’ car broke down.

Reflecting on the moment, the Top Gear star said: “We get put into crazy situations the whole time.

“They are quite dangerous but this one was too much really.

“We just sat there thinking, ‘I don’t want to be here’.

“The road was really a goat track and we were about 10,000 feet up in a Renault built in 1982 and I just thought, ‘This could go wrong’.”

Paddy chimed in: “When you do stuff like, you’re there and in the zone.

“It’s only when you watch it back, I watched it back with Christine [McGuinness] and she was like, ‘That’s too much that’.”

Back in 2018, Chris was involved in an accident during filming for the show.

A spokesman for Top Gear told Express.co.uk at the time: “We can confirm that Chris Harris was involved in a car accident in Wales earlier today whilst working on a feature for Top Gear magazine.

“Chris, his passenger, and the driver of the other car, were unhurt and Police were called to the scene.”

Chris’ co-star Freddie admitted he had taken a stunt “too far” during filming for the show last year.

Reports at the time said the presenter was driving a three-wheeled cycle-car that required him to lie down on his front, head on with the road at York’s Elvington Airfield.

A source told The Sun the crew watched in horror as he misjudged the runway and spun off in a cloud of dust.

The accident came in part due to the rushed nature of the race – a time trial in which Freddie wanted to prove his worth.

He later said: “I’m absolutely fine and have been back filming.

“I go to great lengths to make sure I do well in Top Gear drag races but, on this occasion, I went a few lengths too far.

“It will look more ridiculous than dangerous when you see it on TV.”
