Coronation Street star could have ended up in slavery after arriving in UK with £300 in her pocket

Coronation Street actress Ruxandra Porojnicu became an instant fan favourite when she first appeared in Weatherfield last year.

But the actress, who played nail technician Alina Pop, has revealed that the slavery storyline she was involved in could have been based on her real life.

Back in 2015 when Ruxandra, 26, arrived in the UK as an immigrant she had no more than £300 in her pocket.

The Romanian actress says she could have ended up in slavery, just like her character did in the soap.

Writing on Instagram at the time that she was filming her first scenes on Corrie, she said: “Couldn't be more excited about this week.

“First episodes of my storyline in @coronationstreet start tonight on ITV.

“Tragically, human trafficking and slavery are still happening in 2019, in places and with people we would never have guessed.

“It is a very sad truth that moved me to tears. As an immigrant, moving abroad with just £300 in my pocket, I could have been in this situation.

“It is a great responsibility to be the voice of someone who went through this experience and I truly hope this storyline will make a change and will bring awareness in our society.

Ruxandra, who first worked as a cleaner on a construction site after arriving in London, had never seen Corrie before auditioning for it because she didn’t own a TV.

"I grew up with the Rocky films and believe in fighting for my dream and that's why I'm acting. I started modelling jobs, extra work and commercials.

This week fans of Corrie will get to see Alina make her return to the cobbles, and Rox can’t wait to be back on screens.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News she said: “I'm over the moon and I can't wait.

"I'm a bit nervous because I don't know how people will take it but I hope it's positive.

"It was a challenging storyline. There are so many people from my country going abroad for a better living, and I've done the same.”
