Duane Chapman has opened up about the most painful loss he’ll ever face.
The veteran reality TV star, best known to fans as Dog the Bounty Hunter, said goodbye to wife Beth Chapman on Wednesday morning.
After a lengthy battle with throat cancer, she died at the age of 51.
This sad piece of news was confirmed by Duane himself, who Tweeted the following:
It’s 5:32 in Hawaii, this is the time she would wake up to go hike Koko Head mountain. Only today, she hiked the stairway to heaven. We all love you, Beth.
Now, several hours after announcing that Beth had died from stage II throat cancer in Hawaii, Duane has spoken to local reporters about the “unexpected” and sudden loss — along with how he’s been coping.
“It’s terrible, the most terrible time in someone’s life,” he told Hawaii News Now alongside his two daughters.
“You kind of try to remember that you’re celebrating life, but right now we’re mourning the death, so it’s not good.”
Beth was originally diagnosed in September of 2017, but then declared to be in remission after undergoing chemotherapy.
Then, however, the disease returned this past November, forcing her to be rushed into emergency surgery and setting her on a path from which she would never fully recover.
She was placed in a medically-induced coma on Sunday and died three days later.
“The cancer gig, of course, we’ve gotta find a cure,” Duane added in this latest interview. “Because all we have now is some get lucky, but most pass away.”
Throughout Beth’s journey, she and her loved ones shared private and candid photos, such as the one below:
Since Beth’s passing, her daughter and other loved ones have paid tribute to her online.
But, in his most recent comments, Duane went as far as to share Beth’s final words to him.
“When she had an attack I didn’t know anything to do but to say ‘in Jesus’ name’ and hold her and when I said ‘in Jesus’ name’ she said, ‘Say it again, say it more,’” Dog recalled.
He continued:
“And then she told the girls and everybody, with her mouth – she came out of it a couple times – ‘I love you’ and ‘Are you guys all okay? Don’t worry,’ but she never accepted it.”
“So amazing, this is totally unbelievable,” Duane added, referring to the way in which his wife was thinking of others, even up to the very end.
The famous bounty hunter also detailed how Beth would often leave him notes around the house, joking that he’ll probably get home to numerous messages from Beth, despite her passing.
“She did it her way. There’s some things that they predicted that the doctors ended up saying, ‘We’ve never, ever, seen anything like this,’” he shared.
“Her way was to live. She wanted to live so bad and she fought so long, and the reason she fought, she liked life but she wanted to show people how to beat it and what to do when it got her…
“One of the last things she said [was] ‘It’s a test of my faith,’” he continued. “She had faith and that was it. There’s things you go through when you’re dying, like steps like you do when you lose someone, right?
“You get mad at them, and then you go through all these steps.”
Sources have confirmed to The Hollywood Gossip that Beth will be cremated.
Daughter Bonnie and stepdaughter Lyssa have shared photos online of what looks to be a memorial at the home in Hawaii she shared with her husband.
As the family continues to mourn the loss of its wife and mother, Duane told Hawaii News he’s turning to his religion to help him cope.
“I loved her so much,” he concluded. “As Lazarus lay, Jesus said he’s not dead, he’s sleepeth. My final words are Beth isn’t dead, she’s sleeping.
“I hope to god there is a God. I trained myself [to think] ‘What would Jesus do?’ and I hope I’m not just talking to myself.
“I hope there is a God and if there is, I’m gonna see my honey again. That’s all we can do is hope.”
