Samantha Giles, 49, found fame in Coronation Street before moving onto Emmerdale in 1998, portraying her long-term character Bernice Blackstock. But, before getting her big break, the actress said she struggled to make ends meet which resulted in working as a nude life model.

Reflecting on her financial struggles, she said she isn’t ashamed of her past.
The soap star said: “I was really desperate for money. I’m not ashamed of it, I wasn’t doing anything terrible.
“It paid £5 an hour, which is nothing, but I’d get £15 for an evening, which seemed quite good.
“I was only 23, but I’ve never liked my body, so the only way I found I could do it was by not looking down at myself when I dropped the sarong. I never looked at their work either.”
During an “uncomfortable moment” posing for a group of elderly artists, Samantha recalled the time she was told she’d never be big in the acting world.
The actress said a man told her, “You might get the odd job, but you’ll never be a household name”.
Samantha said she felt “devastated” by the comment, but didn’t say anything back to the unnamed person.
“In a way, when people are that nasty it can make you even stronger and I never thought about giving up,” she added to The Mirror.
The soap star is set to return to the Dales, following a two-year break.
During her break, she branched out into a career as a writer and wrote three children’s books.
Samantha has also had roles in Where The Heart Is, Hollyoaks and Doctors, but is best known for her stint in Emmerdale.
The actress previously expressed her disappointment at her exit scenes back in 2019.

At the time, Bernice was seen leaving behind fiancé Liam (Jonny McPherson) to go to Australia, after learning that her ex-husband Charlie had been in a serious accident.
She told Inside Soap last year: “If she had been killed, perhaps I’d have got a better exit storyline, as it was a little disappointing.”
Samantha added that fans told her they felt “cheated” by her departure, adding: “You can’t please everyone!”
In a different interview, she said she felt “very low” after leaving the soap.
“I’d gone from seeing people every day and being so busy to nothing. But I had to go through it,” she explained.
“I knew it would be so easy to stay [at Emmerdale] forever as it was a great job, but I wanted to try and do something different with my life.”
Bernice is expected to return to the Dales later this year.
Emmerdale is on ITV, every weekday at 7pm with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursday.
