Lorraine Kelly bid farewell to ITV News Meridian presenter Fred Dinenage on Twitter last night. The television presenter shared a fitting tribute online, following the announcement that the news anchor was stepping down at the end of the year.

The 79-year-old is the longest serving regional news presenter on the network, having worked on the six o’clock show in the south and south east for almost 38 years.

“HOW can this be happening!” Lorraine wrote online, when she shared the news of Fred’s departure with her 658,800 followers.

The accompanying post included a picture of the presenter and further details.

“Was he the how for now guy when I was a kid?”(sic) Instagram user ianmcaldow asked in the comments section of the post.

“And that’s how for now!” user onetasha added, seemingly answering the questions and referencing the newsreader’s famous catchphrase.

In addition to presenting the news, the television star is best known for fronting educational programmes How and How 2.

Fred said that his decision to leave ITV was a “tough” one, however, he is looking forward to spending time with his wife Beverley.

The couple, who tied the knot in 1967, have three grown up children, including Caroline Dinenage, 49, who is the Conservative MP for Gosport.

Following the announcement, Fred said: “After almost thirty eight years co-presenting the ITV six o’clock show in the south and south east I’ve finally decided to hang up my microphone.

“It’s been a really tough decision but I now want to spend a few years with my wife, Beverley, and our three dogs ‘smelling the roses’ in my garden and spending time in the mountains of Austria.

“I will be continuing with my crime programmes and ITV’s ‘How?’ and writing books, including one recently commissioned. But now I feel it is the right time to move on.

Fred went on to thank his co-host and the viewers for their support over the years.

“I will miss my dear co-presenter, Sangeeta [Bhabra], and my colleagues at ITV Meridian terribly.

“And, of course, I will miss our wonderful viewers who’ve given me such incredible love and support for so long.

“I’ve been so lucky in my life and career – fifty eight years working non-stop on regional and network programmes with ITV and I’ve been blessed by having a truly special family. So, to everyone – thank you.”

Fred began hosting the 6pm news programme in 1983, working with the likes of Fern Britton and Natasha Kaplinsky.

Before that, he presented How with Jack Hargreaves from 1966 to 1981.

The popular series answered a string of questions beginning with the word ‘How’.

Ten years later, the show was brought back for a second outing.

How 2 Ran until 2006 and starred Carol Vorderman, Siân Lloyd and Gail Porter.

Fred also starred in the third instalment, the 33rd series, which ran from November to December last year.
