At the 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships, Simone Biles made history again by becoming the first gymnast ever to land a double-twisting, double somersault dismount. The five-time Olympic medalist attempted the move earlier; however, didn’t stick the landing.

Born March 14, 1997, in Columbus, Ohio, Simone Arianne Biles is currently 22-years-old and stands four feet and eight inches tall. She has three other siblings; however, her mother could not properly care for them due to a drug addiction.

Their father also had the same battle and abandoned her family. Therefore, the Biles children were in and out of various foster homes. Their maternal grandfather began caring for the kids with his wife in 2000 after finding out about his grandchildren’s situation.

Three years later, they adopted the youngest two children, including Biles, and their grandfather’s sister adopted the oldest two. After first trying gymnastics as part of a field trip, the instructor suggested she continue learning the sport.

Therefore, she enrolled in a local program and began training at eight-years-old.

Biles competed in her first competition in 2011 at the American Classic in Houston, Texas, and placed third all-around. She then competed again in the same year in Chicago, Illinois, but placed twelfth. The following year, she returned to the American Classic and placed first-all around, securing her spot at the 2012 USA Gymnastics National Championships at 15-years-old.

After competing in two more competitions where she placed first-all around and third, she was named to the U.S. Junior National Team. In 2013, she made her international debut at the American Cup by replacing a gymnast who withdrew due to injuries.

After leading for two rotations, the young gymnast fell off a beam and placed second behind her teammate, Katelyn Ohashi. She then competed in the 2013 City of Jesolo Trophy in Italy where she contributed to the United States bringing home the gold.

She also competed in Germany where her team again won the gold medal. Even though Biles performed poorly at the 2013 U.S. Classic, she competed at the USA Gymnastics National Champions the following month and was crowned the all-around champion.

After another competition, Biles became the seventh American woman and the first African-American to win the world all-around title. The young gymnast continued to dominate and appeared at the 2016 Olympic Games. In another record-breaking moment, Biles became the first American female gymnast to win the individual all-around gold and team gold at the same Olympic games.

She then took a year off and came back in 2018 by competing in the U.S. Classic where she won the all-around title.
