Over the years, Ariana Grande hasn’t been afraid to showcase her relationships with family, friends, and boyfriends with the world.
The singer is known for showcasing her loved ones pretty often on social media as she continuously shines a light on the bonds she has with those she’s closest with.
While there are a handful of people Grande can’t picture her life without, there are a few individuals who aren’t as close to the singer as many would have assumed.
Grande cut off all contact with her father in 2013
One thing that Grande cherishes the most in life is the close bond she has with her family.
The singer’s family means everything to her and she wouldn’t be where she is today if it wasn’t for the ongoing love and support they give her.
While many of us are used to seeing Grande’s mother, Joan Grande, brother Frankie Grande, and her Nonna, many people have wondered why she’s rarely seen with her father?
In the past, Grande has revealed that she is estranged from her dad, Edward Butera, and has been for a few years.
Butera, a Florida-based graphic designer, has remained more or less absent from the pop star’s life ever since he separated from her mother when she was eight-years-old.
By the time Grande was 20-years-old, she fell out of touch completely with her father and recalled that difficult time in her September 2014 cover story for Seventeen.
“Falling out of touch with my dad [was the toughest thing I’ve ever dealt with]. It’s private, but it happened last year,” she said at the time. “It took me so long to be okay with it.”

Though she didn’t divulge into what exactly caused them to have a falling out, Grande went on to reveal that she eventually came to terms with where she stood with Butera.
“The thing that got me there was embracing the fact that that I am made up of half my dad, and a lot of my traits come from him,” she admitted to the magazine. “So much of me comes from my father, and for so long, I didn’t like that about myself. I had to accept that it’s okay not to get along with somebody and still love them.”
Are they still estranged?
Despite never really being close with her dad, Grande has grown from the drama and is no longer dwelling on the past.
While the songstress has remained mum on her and her father’s distant relationship, the father-daughter duo have been working toward mending their bond.
Back in 2017, Grande shared an adorable throwback photo of her and Butera together to show him a little love on Father’s Day.

Just last year, the singer even mentioned her father toward the end of her chart-topping track “Thank U, Next”.
“One day I’ll walk down the aisle / holding hands with my mama / I’ll be thanking my dad / ’cause she grew from the drama,” she croons.
While this doesn’t really reveal whether or not Grande and Butera mended their relationship, it seems as though they are in a much better place now than they were before.
Seeing as though “Thank U, Next” is all about being thankful for past grievances, it suggests that Grande has moved past her and her father’s falling out and doesn’t plan on going down that path again.
