Gemma Atkinson, 36, was left emotional after she helped an injured dog receive medical attention today after responding to a picture posted on Facebook. The former Hollyoaks star shared a photo of the canine on Instagram after she arranged for the dog to be looked over by her local animal sanctuary.

The vets informed Gemma that the dog was in a “bad way” as she had a number of injuries that the star claimed had been inflicted by an individual.

Gemma posted a photo of the brown coloured Staffordshire Terrier and typed: “About 2hrs ago I saw this picture on Facebook. This dog was found wandering around an area I know well.

“I messaged the kind lady who had taken the dog in and I arranged for her to take the dog up to our sanctuary @bleakholt_animal_sanctuary I’ve just been informed she is in a bad way with a broken paw and huge cut around her eye.

“She’s terrified. The staff are going to keep her settled tonight and see how she is tomorrow.

“She also seems to recently have had puppies. Someone did this to her. And they left her alone.

“The lack of compassion and care for an animal clearly in need breaks me.

“But due to the fact she was posted on Facebook, I saw the post, kay, the kind lady took her home and between us, we got her to a safe place, gives me hope that together, we can always help when it’s needed. (sic)

“And social media can be used to do good deeds as well. The staff at Bleakholt have named her Jessica. please always be kind to animals as well,” she added.

In response, fans thanked Gemma for her act of kindness as they applauded her selfless actions.

One said: “Poor little thing, at least she is safe now.”

A second replied: “Thank you for helping! This poor doggo.” (sic)

While a third replied: “Thank you for making sure she’s safe. Poor baby breaks my heart how people are so cruel.”

The actress shares daughter Mia with her fiancé Gorka Marquez, 31, who she met while competing on Strictly Come Dancing back in 2017.

Over the weekend the couple hosted a birthday party for their youngster as she celebrated her second birthday.

Taking to her Instagram Story the 36-year-old posed with pals outside their house before heading into their gorgeous grey kitchen to show off Mia’s fabulous cake.

Gemma can be seen scooping up Mia in her arms above a huge yellow custom-made drip cake as proud dad Gorka holds the cake for the pair to blow out the candles, with Aloe Black’s My family as a backing track on the Insta reel.

The radio presenter gushed earlier this week, ahead of the party: “2 years of you = 2 years being a better me.

“Thanks for making me your mum Mia. We love you so much and seeing the little lady you’re becoming, it’s now so obvious why you were born on Independence Day #2today @gorka_marquez we’re the luckiest.

To which dad Gorka replied: “My little Princess.”
