Jada Pinkett Smith Considered the Rumors of Her Divorce With Will Smith 'Good News'

Jada Pinkett Smith and her husband Will Smith have been the subject of rumors and controversy for years now. Although the speculation might annoy the Smiths every now and then, Pinkett Smith admitted that sometimes she preferred the gossip. If only because she found something positive from the endless rumors.

Jada Pinkett Smith doesn’t feel she’s mature enough to have an amicable divorce

From open marriages to an impending divorce, the Smiths have been putting up with a downpour of rumors and speculation for years now. Although their relationship issues have been well documented, Jada has shared that divorce is never an option for her family. No matter what. One of the reasons was that Jada felt she lacked the maturity for an amicable split.

“For me personally, I’m not mature enough to have a divorce,” Pinkett Smith revealed on Red Table Talk (via People). “I’m just not. I don’t think I would ever be mature enough. I don’t.”

When asked to elaborate, Pinkett Smith mentioned the financial difficulties a separation would bring into the Smiths’ lives.

“Because when you have to start going in, breaking up assets, that right there,” Pinkett Smith continued.

She later added, “Let me tell you, that’s when the red table turns upside down and it won’t be red no more!”

She claimed that the red table would be “smashed to shambles.’

For Smith, however, it was also a matter of not having to experience the stresses of marital separation ever again.

“Because I had been divorced before, I wasn’t getting divorced again. Divorce wasn’t an option,” he once said on the show.

Jada Pinkett Smith believed that the rumors surrounding her marriage to Will Smith were a good thing

Pinkett Smith was once able to find a silver lining in regards to the endless rumors that trailed her and her husband. For The Matrix star, if the speculation was focused on a fictional divorce, it meant she and Smith were doing something right.

“It’s actually good news and bad news. The good news is there’s nothing else to talk about. This has been the only story,” Pinkett Smith said in a 2015 interview with Entertainment Tonight. “Let’s round up the divorce story again!”

She also took the time to once again profess her affection towards Smith, while acknowledging the rumors would likely persist.

“You know what? People gotta make their money and do what they gotta do, you know what I mean?” Pinkett Smith continued. “At the end of the day, I realize that too. And if people can go to sleep at night creating those stories then hey, have it… And he won’t be with me tonight at the [Magic Mike XXL] premiere so… here we go again!”

Still, Pinkett Smith felt the need to get the real message across one more time.

“Just so that you know, we’re not getting a divorce… again,” she said.

Jada Pinkett Smith didn’t want a traditional marriage

Despite their newfound bond, there were a few times when the power couple faced a few rough patches. One of those moments came when the two clashed over their wedding ceremony.

“Jada didn’t believe in a conventional marriage and despised the traditional ceremony. She also had questions about the viability of monogamy as a framework for successful long-term relationships,” Smith wrote in his memoir Will (via Entertainment Tonight). “Jada wanted to look into my eyes, devote her undying love before God, and then get on with the difficult business of building a life together.”

As the time for their marriage drew closer, the tension would escalate.

“Jada held her ground as long as she could, but pretty soon, the ‘wedding pressure’ became too much. She was in her second trimester, she was tired and uncomfortable, and she didn’t want to argue,” Smith said. “She also couldn’t bear the thought of breaking her mother’s heart, and deep down inside — even though I wasn’t saying it — she knew I wanted a wedding too.”

Reluctantly, Pinkett Smith agreed to the wedding. This would be the first of a few clashing ideologies that threatened their marriage. Ultimately, the two later decided they couldn’t be responsible for one another’s happiness. That was the only way their marriage could work.

“’I retire,’ I said. ‘I retire from trying to make you happy. You are free. You need to go make yourself happy and prove to me that it’s even possible. But I quit—you go do you, and I’m-a go do me,’” Smith told his wife.

After a while, the two came to an understanding thanks to this newfound philosophy. They believed this resulted in a much stronger bond and partnership between their family.
