Jada Pinkett Smith On Not Being ‘Built For A Conventional Marriage’ & Why She & Will Are

Jada Pinkett Smith is not about to be boxed, caged, or tied down by the constructs of conventional marriage!

In a new interview with The Guardian, the Girls Trip star opened up about why she and husband Will Smith have been so very candid about the inner workings of their marriage over the past few months.

Not only did the actress recently reveal to the media she had hit a wall in their relationship about 10 years ago, she then invited the actual Fresh Prince on her Facebook Watch show Red Table Talk to dissect their marriage in front of all of social media.

So, why are the Smiths being so honest and open about their less-than-perfect partnership? According to Jada, they’re just trying to help other couples who might be experiencing similar struggles!

She explained to The Guardian:

“I knew that I was not built for conventional marriage. Even the word ‘wife’: it’s a golden cage, swallow the key. Even before I was married, I was like, ‘That’ll kill me.’ And it damn near did! So why wouldn’t you share what you’ve been through, when you see that other people are out there, trying to figure this crap out? We decided to make it public because it’s part of the healing. I feel like if we don’t have real understanding about it, I don’t know if interpersonal relationships are possible.”

How nice of them!

The 47-year-old went on to clarify how she was hesitant to get hitched because of her issues with the institution of marriage itself — NOT because of whom she was marrying.

She continued:

“Will is my life partner and I could not ask for a better one. I adore him, I never want people to think it was Will I didn’t want to marry. But I can assure you that some of the most powerful women in the world feel caged and tied, because of the sacrifices they have to make to be in that position. So I wanted to talk about how we really feel about marriage.”

Thanks for sharing, gurl!

Smith didn’t elaborate on exactly how her and her hubby’s unconventional marriage operates — but it’s safe to assume she’s now only caged and tied when she wants to be.

As we reported, the actress previously opened up about redefining her relationship with the Oscar nominee after years of struggling to appreciate what they had together. While there was a time about 10 years ago where Jada claimed she felt “depleted” in their relationship, she said she knew they could bounce back if they worked together.

She explained:

“I am kind of a ride-or-die chick. I just knew with the kind of love that Will and I share — which is beyond romantic love — that we could transform our union and figure out how to re-create what we had.”

These days, the Smiths — who tied the knot back in 1997 — are the happiest they’ve ever been. Jada noted:

“The journey between Will and me… we have come to such a beautiful place. I feel like we have a stronger bond than we even had in the beginning.”

A little unconventionality goes a long way!
