After saying she would stand for leader of Labour if Jeremy Corbyn resigned, Jess Phillips has set her sights on building her cabinet-quite literally.
The 38-year-old Labour back bencher is planning to furnish No 10 with flatpack items from Ikea.
Quite a chance from Boris Johnson who kitted out Downing Street with furnishings from John Lewis while Samantha Cameron fitted a £25,000 kitchen.
Speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, Jess admitted: “You’ve got to think about these things – and I don’t like the decoration.
"You can change it, but you’ve got to do it frugally so nobody minds. I’ll go round IKEA and do a refit. I’m mentally moving in!”
Previous Prime Ministers have used public money for renovations on the Grade-1 listed 10 Downing Street, but paid for “furniture and fittings” with their own money – so perhaps Jess doesn’t need to be so thrifty.
Typically, PMs spend their first days in power hammering out treaties rather than hammering in nails anyway.
And despite not even having the top job as leader of the party – or winning a general election – Jess is already planning her career after post Number 10.
The MP wants to be the first former PM to compete on Strictly Come Dancing.
