Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos Got a New Family Addition

The Consuelos family is growing. Kelly Ripa announced that after featuring Lena, a Maltese-Shih Tzu mix, on Live with Kelly and Ryan's Happy Pets segment on March 8, the family adopted the rescue dog. She shared the news yesterday with her co-host, Ryan Seacrest. Ripa also shared a few photos of Lena with the family's other dog, Chewie, who is also a rescue.

"The Consueloses have made a decision to adopt Lena," Ripa told Seacrest.

She noted that the family had a few things to consider before bringing Lena into the pack. Ripa noted that she also considered Chewie in the family's decision-making, since she didn't want him to feel like a new dog was coming in to "replace" him.

"My whole fear was that I didn't want Chewie to feel replaced in any way," she added. She saw Chewie's connection to Lena and everyone decided that it was the right thing to do: "Chewie was outside the [Lena's] crate, sitting next to her with their noses together."

Ripa also noted that the family has welcomed the new pup with open arms, though they are reconsidering her name. Lena's name at the shelter was actually Angelina, but Ripa shortened it.

"My kids want her to be named Leia, as in Princess Leia, because we have Chewie," Ripa added. "I don't know. I need guidance."

People notes that Live! has helped more than a dozen dogs — and one rabbit — find forever homes with its adoption segments.

"If you're thinking about getting a dog, call your local animal shelter. Those dogs are just dreams," Ripa said.
