Matthew McConaughey had one of the most unlikely star turns of the past decade, transitioning from the go-to romantic comedy boyfriend to a frequent dramatic lead and Oscar-winning actor, but it’s actually not all that shocking when you think about it. His natural charisma and dedication to roles made him a star in movies like The Wedding Planner and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and it also served him in more serious films like Mud and Dallas Buyers Club. His most recent movie finds him back in crime-thrilled mode, with the Guy Ritchie-directed The Gentlemen.
McConaughey’s highly successful career has led some fans to ask that million dollar question: just how much money does this guy have in the bank?
Matthew McConaughey’s net worth is $95 million.
McConaughey first captivated audiences in the 1993 coming-of-age film Dazed and Confused, and as of today, his most profitable films include Interstellar, Sing, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Tropic Thunder.
In 2013, it was revealed that McConaughey had turned down a $15 million payday for Magnum, P.I. in order to star in smaller movies like Dallas Buyers Club. For Dallas, McConaughey earned under $200,000, but he also got backend points on the movie’s profit. The film went on to make about $60 million on a $5 million budget, and it also landed McConaughey his first Academy Award for Best Actor.
But lest you think acting is all that McConaughey is good at, he’s also the brand ambassador for Lincoln. His love of the car company is well-known, and he personally owns a number of Lincoln cars, (as well as a Camaro and a Corvette). Reportedly, his involvement with the company, including those often-parodied commercials, is directly attributed to the brand’s bump in sales. He also recently invested in The Athletic, a digital sports media company (who recently broke the bombshell MLB story about the Houston Astros cheating scandal).
Additionally, McConaughey is the creative director and brand spokesman for Wild Turkey, a brand of Kentucky bourbon. Wild Turkey reportedly paid McConaughey $4 million for his efforts, making him the highest-paid creative director in the ad industry.
And just in case you ever want to learn from the man himself, McConaughey is a faculty member and instructor at the University of Texas in Austin. McConaughey’s class is titled “Script to Screen,” and in it he and his students analyze films and their production process. He earns about $12,000 a year for teaching, which breaks down to $6,000 a semester.
