Gardeners’ World host Monty Don has confirmed that his beloved dog Nell has sadly died following a battle with cancer.
Taking to Instagram today, the heartbroken BBC star shared the tragic news with his 1.2 million followers.
He posted a picture of an older Nell sunbathing in long grass and another photo of him holding her as a puppy.
The presenter wrote: “I was going to tell you about my new book which is published next week but that can wait because my lovely dear Nell died last night.
“She was diagnosed with cancer in June and every day this summer has been a gift but it is over now.
“We buried her in the garden next to Nigel wrapped in one of my jackets with flowers, balls and her favourite biscuits.
“Her end was peaceful and dignified and ended obvious suffering but it never gets any easier to bear,” he added.
“So life goes on, but for the moment we are very, very sad.”
Monty has had many canine friends over the years, but golden retriever Nell was arguably the most famous, building up a huge following on social media.
Appearing alongside her owner on his BBC show, she quickly became one of the most popular dogs on television since her debut in 2016.
She used to appear on the show with fellow Golden Retriever Nigel, who sadly died back in 2020.
Monty’s followers quickly took the comments section on Instagram to express their sadness over Monty’s terrible loss.
Sarah wrote: “Really sorry for you. It never gets any easier and she was a very beautiful and special dog.”
While Angela penned: “Oh no Monty, I can’t bear is heartbreak for you all. I’m so very sorry. Sending love and my thoughts to you all.”
Karen commented: “So sorry to read this… I feel like I know your dogs too. Sad news but what a beautiful life she had with you and your family.”
Adam added: “I’m so so sorry. Words fail. It’s enough to say very very sad is shared.”
