New details revealed about Kate Middleton and Prince William’s wedding – from Queen’s joke to special guests

The bells of Westminster Abbey rang out in celebration as the newly married Duke and Duchess of Cambridge emerged from the Great West Door.

It was a beautiful day which boasted a price tag of £24,624,500, due to the many intricate details added to make it so special.

Yes, Prince William and Kate Middleton walked into the history books after their incredible royal wedding in 2011.

There were several memorable moments from the big day on 29 April 2011, from a grumpy bridesmaid, questionable headgear, Pippa Middleton's behind and the celebrity guests.

However a new ITV documentary named The Day Will and Kate Got Married some saw of those closest to the couple divulge details you may not have known about.

Here are some of the new details from the wedding which have recently emerged…

People we didn’t know were invited

As well as the huge array of guests which included famous faces such as the Beckham's, the Middletons’ postman and local butcher also went along.

Yes, there were 1,000 guests in total, from celebrities to international VIPs, but people close to the families also attended the day.

Ryan Naylor, the Middletons’ postman, and Sue and Martin Fidler, the local butchers, attended the magnificent day.

Sue said: “Martin was in the shop, with the postman, and Martin called me and he said, 'There's a letter addressed to you.' And I picked it up, and wow, I was in tears, I couldn't believe Martin and I were worthy of an invitation. But the postman who brought the letter, Ryan, he had an invitation as well."

And when Fiona met the Queen in the Picture Gallery, it runs out Her Majesty took the opportunity to make a joke.

Fiona recalled: "I can remember her saying, 'I hear you've been dismantling my house.’

“We had to take a door down from the room below, for the trolley to go through with the cake. But it was all put back in the end, so it was fine!"

Kate’s parents found out about the engagement first

Prince William proposed to Kate three weeks before the world found out about the big news, and it turns out Carole and Michael Middleton had known all along.

The documentary revealed that Carole and Michael, Kate’s parents, kept it a secret and gave a short statement outside their home, saying they were “thrilled” about the prospect of a wedding.

Pippa Middleton helped with the wedding invites

Pippa Middleton looked absolutely stunning on Kate’s wedding day.


The younger sister of Kate helped her bring the day together by lending a hand with the invites and rang some of the guests from their local village.

One of the guests was pub owner John Haley, who attended the ceremony.

He said in the documentary: “I phoned the number back and she said, 'Hi John, this is Pippa.' She said, 'Kate would like to know if you'd like to go to her wedding.' I honestly never expected it."

And it turns out he was putting in the prep before the ceremony and moved into the palace with his team three days before the big day

The Queen’s staff acted as stand-ins, and he explained: “We actually did a dress rehearsal.

“We'd written cards with everyone's name on them so they knew where they had to sit. We did that on a stopwatch so we could time it. That's how we knew we needed 33 minutes, and they came back and said we could have 29."
