Love Island star Alex George has been praised for setting a good example while other influencers and reality stars party in Dubai.
Stars including Anton Danyluk, Georgia Harrison and Chloe Ferry have been criticised for jetting to Dubai as the UK remains in lockdown.
Many of the reality stars and influencers have justified their trip by saying they are working, which is a legally permitted reason for travel.
However, while many Love Island stars have been called out for their jetsetting during the global pandemic, Dr Alex, who appeared on the 2018 series of the dating show, has been held up as a good example.
The 30-year-old has been working as an A&E doctor in Lewisham throughout the pandemic, and has used his social media platforms to educate his followers on the risks of Covid-19.
The Instagram meme page Archbishop of Banterbury shared a picture of Alex in his scrubs and a face shield and wrote: ‘While almost every other Love Island influencer is partying in Dubai, lets take a moment to appreciate Dr Alex who is still working on the frontlines in hospital for the NHS. This is how to be an influencer.’
The post was liked by over 270,000 people, with Alex’s Love Island co-star Jack Fincham leaving a heart emoji and commenting: ‘Trust me.’
Jake Quickenden also praised Alex, writing: ‘Big respect.’
Dr Alex was chuffed with the response, writing: ‘Thank you so much for the kindness and support. Look after yourselves guys.’
Taking to his Instagram stories, he thanked everyone for their kindness, and said: ‘I’ve just trying to my best throughout this pandemic and stuff, and I feel a sense of responsibility that comes with it, thanks to everyone who’s doing their best across the NHS and keyworkers and stuff, I think it’s awesome to recognise these people. Thank you so much.’
In his latest Instagram post, Alex urged his followers not to give up hope during lockdown, writing: ‘Guys I just want to take a moment to check in with you all, for whoever needs to hear this today ? Whether you are unwell with covid, away from family and friends or exhausted from working on the frontline, I am thinking of you. It’s ok to feel fed up with this situation. It’s ok to be frustrated and sad.
‘Please know that nothing lasts forever. There is light at the end of the tunnel and together we will get there. You are never alone. Don’t lose hope.’
The reality star is set to leave A&E and become a GP later this year.
Meanwhile, fellow islander Olivia Attwood has been calling out ‘tone-deaf’ influencers who are saying they are ‘working hard’ on holiday.
She told Grazia: ‘[There’s been polls on Instagram like] “I’m really stressed, do I post, do I not”. Like that’s not stress. People literally can’t feed their children, we are in a national situation where there are children literally starving, being given these sad little bags of food from the government.
‘I don’t think any of them are doing anything with malicious intentI think it’s just a bit tasteless, maybe they need to educate themselves and they need someone near them to kind of give them a little nudge.’
