Rihanna not paid for Super Bowl Half-Time Show thanks to decades-old rule

Despite delivering a jaw-dropping, sell-out performance during last night's halftime 2023 Super Bowl, pop megastar Rihanna will not receive any payment for her concert according to decades-old rules.

The Barbadian singer, 34, kicked off the live performance at Sunday night's 2023 Super Bowl suspended high above the stadium and dressed in all red, performing a medley of her chart-topping hits.

During what was her first performance at the eagerly-anticipated American football event – her first in seven years – the Umbrella hitmaker made the shock announcement that she's pregnant with her second child.

Rihanna had previously turned down the opportunity to perform at the much-loved sporting event, revealing last year that she agreed to get on board for the 2023 edition.

And though fans might expect the star to be receiving a pretty penny for her performance, according to the NFL policy, halftime singers are not subject to any form of financial compensation for the gig.

Although the league covers all costs related to the production of the halftime show, including travel expenses, NFL spokesperson Joanna Hunter told Forbes in 2016 that this doesn't include paying the singers.

"We do not pay the artists. We cover expenses and production costs," she told the US publication.

Last night saw Rihanna follow in the footsteps of chart-topping musical legends Coldplay, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, The Rolling Stones, Bruno Mars, U2, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, all of whom are amongst those who have performed at the halftime point.

Despite not receiving a pay-cheque for her hard-work during last night's gig, Rihanna is in the midst of some mega exposure, with the concert likely being her largest gig and the stadium seating 63,000 spectators.

It is also believed that the incredible show will send her record sales into overdrive.

Lady Gaga's 2017 performance saw her album and song sales skyrocketed by a whopping 1,000 per cent, and in 2020 J. Lo gained a whopping 2.3 million new followers across social media channels after she and Shakira performed together.

During Rihanna's performance, fans were treated to a selection of hits from her catalogue, including B**ch Better Have My Money, We Found Love and Umbrella, as well as two tracks she recorded with controversial rapper Kanye West, performed back to back.

Throughout the performance Rihanna commanded the stage, strolling up and down amid an army of dancers dressed in white hoodies and sweat pants – at one point stopping to touch up her make-up.

Strobe lights and fireworks punctuated the show, and the singer donned a long red coat to finish with hits Umbrella and Diamonds.
