Aljaz Skorjanec decided to step down from Strictly Come Dancing last year after nine years as part of the professional line-up. At the time, the 32-year-old released a statement to announce his exit, telling fans he had “lots of exciting stuff planned”.
Reflecting on his departure in a new interview, the dancer admitted it was wife Janette Manrara’s exit from the show that led him to quit.
He said: “It was different doing it without Janette. My job was very different.
“Strictly is the most incredible opportunity but sometimes I needed that shoulder right next to me for a hug. It felt really different.”
The dancer went on to say he was advised not to leave, but thought “life is too short” and wanted to explore other things, such as acting.
Janette, 38, left the show after getting to the final with HRVY in 2020 to present Strictly: It Takes Two alongside Rylan Clark.
She told OK! Magazine of her decision: “That was the hardest goodbye. Even now, I tear up watching the group numbers.”
Now learning to live like a normal couple and spending time apart, the couple admitted it’s a “weird” feeling.
She added: “That was a transition for us. I missed him a lot but it was kind of good for us in that way.
“We fell in love with each other all over again.
“It was nice to find my own feet but actually feel like I still need him and still want him around all the time.”
Echoing her words, Aljaz said distance makes them “miss each other more” but admitted it was “hard to get used to”.
Janette and Aljaz married back in 2017 after six years together.

The couple met through their love of dance at a London studio where he later popped the question.
They have been branded “couple goals” several times by fans on Instagram where they post loved-up snaps together, but Janette says they’re far from perfect.
The dancer admitted, like all marriages, they have had their “ups and downs” but said communication is key.
“We help each other through the good times and the bad.
“We’re each other’s best friends and that’s what’s helped us survive this crazy industry together,” she added.
Back in 2020, the pair said they “definitely” want to have a baby when it feels right for them.
At the time, they were prioritising work, noting that a dancer’s career can be short.
