Country supergroup The Highwomen took to the stage at the Newport Folk Festival last weekend to perform their first-ever official live show since forming earlier this year.
The group, which consists of Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby, performed the entire, 12-track setlist from their upcoming eponymous, debut album, including “If She Ever Leaves Me,” co-written by Shires’ husband, Jason Isbell.
“Initially I thought this song would be one of heterosexual country love,” Isbell shared with the crowd. “Until it occurred to me that maybe, just maybe, Brandi Carlile would sing this song, and it could be a gay country song. So then we wrote it from that perspective.”
Produced by Dave Cobb, the album is due out on September 6 via Elektra Records.
