Tony Slattery was seen as one of the most successful comedians in the 1980s and early 1990s, but in 1996 the comedian retired his career in the spotlight amid rumours of a breakdown. Tony returns to our screens tonight in his documentary and opens up on his mental health alongside his supportive partner, Mark Hutchinson.

In the documentary, Tony will explore his substance abuse as well as his mental health.

Previously Tony has opened up about his mental health to the Guardian.

In an interview with the Guardian last year, Tony opened up about his personal life and how his partner Mark has supported him throughout the years.

Tony said: “He’s kept with me when my behaviour has been so unreasonable, and I can only think it’s unconditional love.

“He’s certainly not with me for my money – we don’t have any money.

“It’s the mystery of love. I’m sorry – it makes me very emotional.”

Tony and his partner Mark are reported to have met at the height of Tony’s career when they both starred in a West End Musical in 1986.

In the documentary, Mark revealed how he coped with caring for Tony over the years.

Mark said: “It’s tiring caring for someone, loving someone who is constantly on the edge.

“I don’t know where the alcohol stops and where the depression starts.

“You don’t know what to prioritise or treat first: is it because of the alcohol or is it depression.”

Mark went on to admit he tried to leave Tony on a few occasions over the years.

Mark said: “I’ve run away a couples times, I’d go away for a couple of weeks.”

He later added he would always come back as he couldn’t go on without Tony.

In an interview with The Guardian this year ahead of the documentary, he spoke of his and Tony’s bond.

Mark said: “I could see his vulnerability, his feelings of being lost and alone.

“When you love someone, you don’t walk away when the going gets tough.

“He makes me laugh, he makes me cry – no matter what, he’s my constant.”

Mark went on to say he was starting to see a return on the ‘old Tony.’

Mark told the publication: “But by the end of last year, for the first time in a long time, I could see the old Tony.

“Every day is up and down, but he’s starting to believe that people do seek out his company – that is an upturn.”

What’s the Matter With Tony Slattery? will air tonight on BBC Two at 9pm.
