Adele's New Album Is Coming Sooner Than You Think

Adele hasn’t released an album in five years, if you can believe it. Her music has become such a central part of pop culture that it’s hard to imagine our Spotify playlists before her — and finally, the singer is teasing new music coming soon. At a friend’s wedding this past weekend, Adele relayed a special message to the crowd about her new album, and it’s coming sooner than we thought.

The Sun reports that Adele was at The Mason’s Arms in Battersea, a London pub, when she made her announcement. The star had just officiated the wedding of Laura Dockrill and Hugo White, two friends, and was now performing at the reception. After a spirited rendition of “Rolling in the Deep,” Adele said this to the crowd: “Expect my album in September.”

Friends and fellow musicians Florence Welch, Jessie Ware, and Jack Penate were reportedly at the wedding as well, and cheered at the singer’s announcement. The wedding itself sounds like a blast: Adele later performed “Spice Up Your Life” and “Crazy In Love” (can you imagine? A private Adele concert at your wedding?).

Adele’s last album, 25, was released in 2015. Before that, she’d released two other albums: 21, in 2011, and 19, in 2008. This is the longest break she’s taken from releasing an album since her music career began — though, to be fair, it’s been a busy few years for the English singer-songwriter.

In 2012, Adele gave birth to son Angelo, who she shares with ex-husband Simon Konecki. She and Konecki wed in a secret ceremony in 2017 after dating for six years and announced their split in 2019.

Adele’s previous albums have all been named for her age, so should we be expecting the album 30 come September? Maybe so: “30 will be a drum n bass record to spite you,” the singer joked on her Instagram in May. “30 tried me so hard but I’m owning it and trying my hardest to lean in to it all…31 is going to be a big ol’ year and I’m going to spend it all on myself.”
