Disney Is Reviving 'The Rocketeer' With David Oyelowo as Potential Lead

After 30 years, Disney has finally decided to revive The Rocketeer, bringing onboard David Oyelowo for the project.

According to a new report from Deadline, Oyelowo will be producing the new film — titled Return of the Rocketeer — along with his wife and producing partner Jessica Oyelowo, and may also star as the movie’s titular superhero. Ed Ricourt, whose previous works include Now You See Me and episodes of Marvel Studios and Netflix‘s Jessica Jones will be penning the script, which focuses on a “retired Tuskegee airman who takes up the mantle of the Rocketeer.”

For those unfamiliar, The Rocketeer was originally released back in 1991 and was based on a comic book character of the same name created by artist and writer Dave Stevens. The Joe Johnston-directed Disney project was set in Los Angeles in 1938, following the adventures of a stunt pilot named Cliff Secord who stumbled upon a hidden rocket-powered jetpack. Learning to harness its powers, Secord would ultimately become the Rocketeer, a masked superhero soaring through the skies to fight off injustice and evil, all the while trying to escape from both the FBI and the Nazis who were both after the jet pack.

There’s currently no release date yet for Return of the Rocketeer, so fans of the original cult classic should stay tuned for more updates to come.
