Frank Skinner struggles to hold back tears paying tribute to co-host on podcast

Frank Skinner dedicated his Easter Sunday podcast episode to his late radio co-host and friend Gareth Richards.

The 66-year-old broadcaster put together a show that featured Richards’ best bits and uploaded them to the programme he presents with Absolute Radio – The Frank Skinner Show.

In the episode’s description, Frank typed a heartfelt message to let listeners know about the tribute that read: ‘We are heartbroken about the loss of our dear friend, Gareth.

‘Here are some of his best bits from the times we shared with him on the show’.

The star opened the show with an emotional dedication to his ‘former colleague and dear friend’ and sounded as if he was struggling to hold back tears while he introduced his special segment.

Frank continued: ‘There’s been lots of beautiful messages about Gareth and his family have been very kind to us and kept us informed about the details of his struggle but look, Gareth didn’t make it.

‘Gareth didn’t make it and we will miss him intensely.

‘He was a very kind, gentle, funny, fascinating man and I can’t believe that he…

‘Today’s show features Gareth’s best bits but you are allowed to cry but you have to laugh as well, I think he would have insisted on that’.

He also posted an announcement on his Instagram Story to alert fans to the new episode that was released on Sunday morning: ‘We are heartbroken about the loss of our dear friend, Gareth. We will miss him greatly.

‘Tomorrow we will be releasing a podcast of some of his Best Bits on our show’.

Richards’ death was confirmed by his wife Laura in a post on Facebook on Saturday where she wrote: ‘It is with great sadness that I have to share that Gareth Richards passed away on Friday 7th April (Good Friday) at 6.30pm.

‘He was in a terrible car accident on Monday 27th March at 11.30pm and sustained serious brain injuries. It was a miracle that he arrived at the hospital alive.

‘Since then, the doctors and nurses have been incredible and have kept him in a stable and sedated condition.

‘However, the latest scan revealed that the extent of the damage was so severe that they would have to remove all of the supportive medications and allow him to be at peace.

‘The boys are bearing up well. There will be details of the funeral and other ways to remember Gareth to follow, as I know that he was well-loved. At the moment the grief is a lot to cope with.

‘Thank you all for your support and kindness’.

Richards had co-hosted with Skinner and Emily Dean when The Frank Skinner Show first went on air.
