Social media can be a great way to share highlights of your day with people all over the world. It can also be cruel, especially when people take well-meaning moments out of context or spread malicious lies. And Hilary Duff wants people to know if they come for her family, she will be ready to defend them.
On Saturday, the actor and former BlogHer speaker logged on to discover that bad-faith actors had twisted a video she posted to Instagram Stories which showed off a number of family photos. One of the photos, which featured her 8-year-old son Luca, had been physically covered up with stickers so as to give his body a little privacy. But a few people on Twitter took that photo as a reason to make unfounded and hurtful claims about child trafficking, which Duff swiftly shut down on Twitter.
She wrote: “Everyone bored af right now I know..but this is actually disgusting….. Whoever dreamed this one up and put this garbage into the universe should take a break from their damn phone. Maybe get a hobby.”
In a statement provided to E!, a rep for Duff did not hold back. “Let me say this in the strongest terms, this is all a fabricated disgusting internet lie, created and perpetuated by trolls and idiots,” the statement read. “Hilary’s own post this morning is all that needs to be said on the matter. Everyone who knows Hilary is fully aware what an amazing mom she is and that requires no further comment. If only people with this much time on their hands used their energy to solve real problems in the world.”
Fans have also united with the actor in the comments of her latest Instagram, which is a photo of her and husband Matthew Koma in their foyer. “You are an amazing mama!! Keep your head up!!!,” one wrote. Another urged her to “Please remember your real fans got your back and will always be there for you.”

This isn’t the first time Duff has defended her children from people who encroach on their lives. In February, she put a paparazzo on blast for taking photos of Luca’s football game. “I’m asking you, human-to-human, as a mother, if you don’t know anyone, can you please stop taking pictures of our children playing football this morning?,” she said in a video she posted to Instagram.
