Laurence Fox found himself in the hot seat on his own TV show when his guest, a ruthlessly savage doctor, delivered a scathing takedown of the host during their live interview.
Dr Bharat Pankhania, senior clinical lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School, was invited onto Fox’s GB News programme recently to discuss a report which is said to criticise MHRA’s approval process over the Covid vaccine.
In his monologue, Fox, 44, said: ‘The report is brutal and if it is, as many would suspect, part of a limited hangout, it certainly lets a lot hang out. Going further than before in shredding the veil of secrecy and highlighting the reckless idiocy of our besieged health regulator.
‘It concludes that the MHRA has failed in its duty to protect the public from harm… it failed to react promptly to widespread reports of adversary reactions to the so-called vaccines.’
The former Lewis actor also took aim at the Astra-Zeneca vaccine and highlighted the reports of people suffering blood clots after getting the jab.
He added: ‘Yet again us conspiracy factualists are proved right for the 100th bleeping time.
‘It will take many years for society to come to terms with the evil meted out on us as quacks, or crooks, depending on which side of the c**k-up conspiracy argument you fall on…
‘People are still reeling and hindsight is not as sharp as some day it will surely become.’
Fox later invited Dr Bharat onto the programme and asked his guest: ‘What are your thoughts on what you’re hearing, doctor?’
Dr Bharat stared blankly momentarily before dishing out his brutal takedown: ‘I sometimes wonder why you exist, to be honest with you,’ prompting shocked laughter from Fox.
The doctor continued: ‘Because some of these things you spew out just send things that are worrisome to people. Not verify, not fluctual.
‘You just have your own agenda, and that’s what I think. You are just spewing out your biased views. That’s how I feel about you.’
Fox replied: ‘I wasn’t asking what you felt about me, I was asking what you felt about the discussion.’
However, the doctor wasn’t done and interjected: ‘I feel about you, your statements and the panellists that you brought together. I was brought up on this programme right now, told I’m going to have a one to one conversation with you, and suddenly I find myself in a panel.’
Fox attempted to steer the conversation back to the topic at hand and asked for Dr Bharat’s thoughts on the Covid report, but the guest stated: ‘I haven’t read that report, I knew nothing about that report.’
Dr Bharat then declared the situation was ‘an ambush’, claiming he wasn’t informed he would be asked about the MHRA report.
Fox managed to salvage something out of the interview by asking the doctor for his thoughts on the MHRA in general.
Needless to say, viewers were highly entertained by the uncomfortable exchange, with one tweeting: ‘Jesus, the first line from the doctor is gloriously brutal.’
One commented: ‘”I sometimes wonder why you exist” Absolutely KILLED ME! A devastating burn. Hats off @doctorshaib.’
‘I love it. That made my day,’ one joined in.
Another declared: ‘That was simply perfect,’ while one agreed it was ‘simply delicious!’
Fox didn’t shy away from the awkwardness and later tweeted: ‘After the good doctor started to sermonise about Brexit in relation to vaccine harms, the remainder of the interview was me trying not to giggle.’
The former actor joined GB News in November 2022 and said that he wanted outspoken guests who disagreed with him.
