Joe Jonas has officially filed for divorce from Sophie Turner, according to NBC. A petition filed in Miami, where the couple just sold a home, states that the marriage is “irretrievably broken” and that it is in the best interests of their two children for both parties to “have shared parental responsibility.”
The singer, 34, married his Game of Thrones star wife, 27, in 2019 before welcoming two children: daughter Willa, 3, and a second daughter, 14 months.
While neither have spoken publicly about what caused their split, Turner did allude to a rather serious difference of opinion in an interview with Elle UK in May 2022. The British actress discussed her hopes to move her family to the United Kingdom but made it rather clear that her husband was not on board with the plan.
“I miss England so much,” she said. “The people, the attitude, everything. I’m slowly dragging my husband back. I really love living in America but, for my mental health, I have to be around my friends and my family. And also for my daughter – I would love her to get the education and school life that I was so lucky to have. England would ideally be the final destination, but [Joe] might take quite a bit of convincing! My parent’s house is the epitome of the English countryside – horses, sheep, cows…”
In the same interview, Turner spoke candidly about struggling with her mental health and body image while in the public eye and expressed concerns about raising her daughter in the US due to the prevalence of paparazzi. “My daughter never asked for any of this. I know what it can do to your mental health to be in this industry, and to be photographed every day and have the comments. It’s not something I want her to deal with unless she says, ‘This is what I want to do.’ We’re quite strict about that,” she told the outlet.
Turner told BBC in June that she was “delighted to be back home” while filming a new series in England.
Speculation about the alleged split first mounted when fans noticed Jonas and Turner were not wearing their wedding rings in recent weeks — though the “Cake By The Ocean” singer rather confusingly posted a photo wearing his on September 4. Reports have speculated that the two have had “serious problems” for six months and claimed Jonas has been caring for the couple’s kids “pretty much all of the time” while on tour with the Jonas Brothers.
Jonas and Turner first began dating in 2016 before announcing their engagement the following year when he was 27 and she was 21.
