This Fall/Winter 2022 season, Walter Van Beirendonck unveiled voluminous and incognito silhouettes for the fashion house titled “Otherworldly.” Different from his previous collections, the Antwerp Six designer moved away from his usual color blocking and focused on monochromatic color schemes and articulated structures.
Utilizing various fabrics with the same hues, Van Beirendonck created new looks that saw lightweight Neoprene-like material constructed in a way that gave off an effect similar to that of crocodile leather with its shiny texture. This collection saw a major focus on the shoulder as the essential body part. The shoulders are accentuated and rounded and offer different levels of volume as the shoulders can be constructed or deconstructed, creating alternative looks with oversized sleeves. Each look for the runway was completed with a mask worn by every model. While some had images of eyes or mouths printed atop, others also sported dramatic sunglasses similar to diving goggles made in collaboration with Komono, commenting on the strange times consumers currently live in.
Vivid colors like bright oranges, neon pinks and blues were used to accent certain pieces for a futuristic, utilitarian look. Other pieces include vibrant graphics on skin-tight pants and tops commenting on the reality and fiction of current society. Alien masks accompanied these looks as a nod to the house’s playful imagery and drama. Take a look above at this season’s looks.
