However, things are not looking any better for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. They recently announced that they are taking a step back from being full-fledged members of the royal family, but this move is not sitting well with critics. Many people are now calling Prince Harry and Meghan hypocrites for not abdicating completely.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are stepping down as senior members of the royal family
On January 8, Prince Harry and Meghan shocked fans everywhere when they announced that they are stepping down as senior members of the royal family. According to a statement released by the couple, this simply means that they are looking to no longer receive funding from the tax-funded Sovereign Grant, but they will still take on royal work like supporting patronages.
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” their statement read. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”
Prince Harry and Meghan are also planning on splitting their time between North America and the United Kingdom, saying: “This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”

Prince Harry and Meghan have been given a lot of flack for taking money from the Sovereign Grant, especially after reports came out of how much money they spent in 2018 on home renovations and expensive clothes. This seems to be part of the reason why the couple has decided to “become financially independent.”
However, critics are slamming the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for not abdicating from the royal family completely. Critics think this is simply a “have your cake and eat it too” moment where the two of them are trying to remove the parts that they hate about being royals (the negative press), but they still want to keep being royals in order to enjoy the perks that come with it.
As writer Maureen Callahan wrote in the New York Post: “Will Harry and Meghan keep their royal titles? ‘Work to’ become financially independent — how long is that going to take? Will they continue to get an allowance until that happens? Where will they live while in the UK? In Frogmore Cottage, the estate gifted to them by the Queen, which they spent another $3 million in taxpayer funds renovating?”

Whether Prince Harry and Meghan are hypocrites or not will depend on one’s point of view. Some people find their situation confusing since they are looking to be a part of the royal family while also being separate from it at the same time, which is where the “hypocrites” criticism comes from.
However, some fans support the couple, especially since they are essentially saying that they will still work to serve the public without taking money from taxpayers.

Last August, they were heavily criticized for flying on private jets while trying to promote themselves an environmentally-conscious people. More recently, they were also called hypocrites for giving their son plastic toys for Christmas.
