Cleaning hack: Simple method to clean pans with baking soda
Baking soda is one of the best-known secrets for keeping your home looking clean and shiny. While it’s often used in baking cakes, your household baking soda has a number of different uses – including making your mattress look and smell fresh as a daisy.
Baking soda – or as it’s more commonly known in the UK, bicarbonate of soda – is a cheap and effective solution to expensive cleaning products.
It’s great for removing stains and bad smells, and it can even help to unclog your pipes and drains.
Cleaning gurus have recommended baking soda for a whole host of different appliances, including your kitchen bin, ovens, and even Tupperware.
But did you know that baking soda could even help to clean your mattress?

It’s absolutely vital that you regularly clean your mattress – even though you should also change your bedding every week or so.
Even if you bathe before going to bed, your mattress can get very dirty, even if you can’t see it.
The average person sheds about 285ml of fluid every night, and it’s all absorbed into the mattress.
Over the space of a year, you’re also likely to lose around half a kilogram of dead skin cells, and they also nestle in the bed.

How to clean your mattress with baking soda
Cleaning your mattress with baking soda is really simple, and it’ll get rid of those unwanted smells in no time.
First, take off all of your bedding and sheets, so on the mattress is exposed.
Use your vacuum cleaner to get rid of any debris on the surface of the mattress. Don’t forget to check those crevices, seams and folds.
If you have any large stains visible on the mattress, use some spot cleaner to get rid of the main bits.
Now it’s time to grab your baking soda. Pour a large amount of soda – don’t be shy with it – into a strainer, and sprinkle it across the entire mattress.
Try and wiggle it into every corner of the bed, making sure to cover all of the surface.
If there are any areas of the mattress that are more stinky than others, you can be even more liberal with the baking soda there.
Next, leave the mattress for 24 hours; ideally next to an open window with direct sunlight.
When you come back, vacuum up all of the baking soda, and you should immediately notice the mattress looking shinier.
Flip the mattress over, and repeat everything on the other side.
You should aim to clean your mattress with baking soda at least once a year – ideally twice a year.
The best time is at the beginning of the year, so dirt and dust doesn’t build up on the surface of the bed.
