A woman’s revelation about her loofah cleaning routine has triggered a lively debate among social media users. In a Facebook cleaning group, the woman shared that she washes her loofahs every single week, prompting confessions from others who are less meticulous about their loofah hygiene.
For those who have never considered the cleanliness of their loofahs before, this admission may come as a surprise.
Loofahs, typically made of dried gourd or synthetic plastic, are known for their exfoliating properties and ability to rejuvenate the skin, leaving it glowing and youthful. However, these bathroom essentials can also become a breeding ground for bacteria if not properly cared for.
The woman’s post in the cleaning group sparked sarcastic responses from some members, with one jokingly stating that it was common knowledge to wash loofahs regularly. Others expressed astonishment that loofahs even needed to be washed, admitting they had never done so.
One wrote: “Common knowledge that absolutely everyone, including myself, totally knows right? Like… no one would ever use them for like three to six months at a time and never think to wash them because that had just never occurred to them until they saw this post… because that would be gross obviously.”

Another said: “Definitely, and absolutely not after three years of owning one.”
One user wrote: “OMG, I was like… we’re meant to wash these? I’m glad everyone is also like WTF.”
A fourth remarked: “I’ve never washed mine, only in the shower after use.”
According to Healthline, loofahs can harbor bacteria when left to dry in the bathroom, as they absorb steam residue from showers. The combination of dead skin cells and moisture creates an ideal environment for the growth of harmful bacteria, including e.Coli.
Certain strains of e.Coli can cause stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, and in severe cases, kidney failure, which can be life-threatening, especially for young children and the elderly.
To maintain a clean and hygienic loofah, Healthline recommends wringing out any moisture with a dry towel and storing it in a cool, dry place away from the bathroom. Regular cleaning is also advised, with a diluted water mixture containing 10% bleach to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination. After soaking the loofah in the mixture for five minutes, it should be thoroughly rinsed with cool water and allowed to dry in a cool place.
