Summer has finally arrived in the UK, and The Met Office has said that temperatures are set to rise, due to a hot weather system moving north from Spain and it could give temperatures in the 30Cs.
But if you’ve gone from wishing for warmer weather to cursing it as a result of dreaded hay fever and all of its sniffly, red-nosed nonsense then fear not, as there are various natural hay fever remedies that can help kick it to the curb.
Seeing as the NHS describes hay fever as something “up to one in five people” get affected by at “some point in their life,” the time has come to hunt for remedies to rid us of stinging eyes and all of the other pollen-related problems that come with the seasonal allergy.
Without further ado, here are some remedies you might already have hiding around the home which can help you beat hay fever without breaking the bank.
Honey
Honey can aid with your hay fever troubles as the bee pollen can desensitise your body to other pollens. Sweet!
For best results, include honey in your daily dietary intake and this should help to reduce symptoms.
Vitamin C
You’ll be ticking all sorts of boxes by incorporating vitamin C into your everyday diet. Not only is it a known natural antihistamine, but it can be easily consumed as it’s found in oranges, lemons and grapefruit.
Vitamin C is known to provide a natural decongestant and antihistamine to help hay fever sufferers with their (very inconvenient) symptoms!
Chamomile tea
You can use chamomile tea in two ways to alleviate symptoms – either make yourself a cuppa, or use it as an eye compress.
For an eye compress, make sure to use a fresh compress for each eye to avoid infection – this will help with red, swollen eyes. And for a cuppa? Well, simply pour yourself a mug and enjoy!
Vaseline
If you’ve got a trusty pot of Vaseline to hand then spread a thin layer inside the lower part of the nostrils, et voila! Symptoms might not magically disappear, but this does help to trap pollen attempting to enter the nostrils.
As a result, Vaseline can be effective at stopping symptoms from worsening.
Onions and garlic
Loading up on onions and garlic could go a long way if you’re a hay fever sufferer.
First of all, onions are a natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory.
So, next time you’re cooking a dish in which onions would work a treat, whack them in!
Garlic, too, is a great natural remedy for hay fever. It can help to boost your immune system and alleviate minor symptoms. Best eaten crushed or raw, you can add garlic to meals to help with your hay fever annoyances.
